Amgen is seeking a Director of Corporate Affairs - US Business Operations and General Medicines, based at our corporate campus located in Thousand Oaks, California. The Director will report directly to the Executive Director of Corporate Affairs - Global Commercial Operations.

Consistent with the vision of Amgen Corporate Affairs to "proactively shape, drive and enhance the Amgen brand and reputation globally," the Director of Corporate Affairs - US Business Operations (USBO) and General Medicines, internally known as the Director of Corporate Affairs, is responsible for driving external and internal communication strategy, planning, and implementation in USBO, an organization responsible for delivering more than $17B in product sales annually, as well as serves on the USBO General Medicines Leadership Team.

Key responsibilities of the Director of Corporate Affairs - US Business Operations and General Medicines include:
  • Communicates, counsels and supports USBO leadership team, including the senior vice president, U.S. Commercial Operations, General Medicine
  • Oversees all external product communication (issues management, approvals, data publications, launches) in close partnership with the relevant Global and regional Corporate Affairs colleagues (i.e., research & development, content strategy and media relations), and cross-functional business partners (i.e., Medical, Regulatory, Compliance, Legal, Advocacy, Value, Access and Policy)
  • Oversees USBO-wide internal communication, including all-staff meetings, support for leadership presentations, and other key communication activities
  • Manages USBO Corporate Affairs staff
  • Maintains and upgrades USBO communication processes and policies
  • Ensures Corporate Affairs resources are deployed on highest business priorities to deliver greatest value
  • Partners with global and regional colleagues to ensure issues and crisis management preparedness and handle communication issues in partnership with the relevant Global Corporate Affairs colleagues
  • Oversees all communication related to the annual Amgen Tour of California, Breakaway Initiatives and other USBO-driven community activities
  • Acts as an advocate, champion and expert for USBO within the wider Global Corporate Affairs team and serve as a role model for the function
  • Shares and adopt best practices from across the Amgen regions and global team

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 4 years of Journalism and/or Corporate Communications and/or Marketing experience


Master's degree and 8 years of Journalism and/or Corporate Communications and/or Marketing experience


Bachelor's degree and 10 years of Journalism and/or Corporate Communications and/or Marketing experience


4 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Biotechnology, pharmaceutical or healthcare public relations and corporate experience
  • 10+ years' experience working in-house for a multinational company or within a public relations agency serving multinationals
  • Bachelor's Degree in public relations, communications or journalism or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong oral and presentation skills; ability to negotiate and persuade
  • Superior writing skills and proven media relations skills that are results-oriented
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and deal with rapidly changing priorities
  • Ability to interact with all levels of management and manage staff and vendors
  • Proven track-record leading, developing and empowering individuals and teams
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; enthusiastic, team player and self-starter; serious commitment to hard work and excellence
  • Ability to productively navigate a challenging and dynamic environment
  • Understands nuances and details of specific company positions or issues that could affect communications tactics
  • Policy experience and crisis management experience
  • Independently judges risks and benefits from a communication perspective and makes a persuasive case for taking calculated risks in the organization's best interest
