The EHS Director has direct accountability for EHS performance and compliance throughout AbbVie's manufacturing sites and TPMs globally, which includes 12 AbbVie manufacturing plants and approximately 50 Third Party Manufacturing (TPM) sites around the world. The Director develops programs and systems to prevent catastrophic safety and environmental events from occurring in plant manufacturing operations and TPMs around the world. This position has the responsibility to manage and lead approximately 53 direct and indirect EHS professionals located at AbbVie plants globally. The Director is responsible for developing qualified regional and plant site EHS positions to ensure compliance program needs are met. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Oversees all manufacturing plants as well as third party manufacturers from an EHS standpoint. AbbVie is a very high risk company from an EHS standpoint due to numerous chemical, fire, explosion, regulatory compliance and catastrophic event potential.
  • Pharmaceutical manufacturing represents very high EHS risks due to chemical and combustible powder usage. This position is directly responsible for safety, environmental, and process safety throughout the manufacturing supply chain. Position requires a recognized leader in EHS with strong technical skills and strong interpersonal skills, as well as extensive international experience. Needs to understand regional and global business drivers and regulations.
  • Position has responsibility for high level negotiations with external EHS regulatory agencies throughout the world. Responsible for carbon footprint reductions throughout pharmaceutical manufacturing. Also responsible for managing and reducing environmental emissions and waste.
  • Responsible for keeping current on emerging technologies and regulatory issues that have the potential to impact the business.
  • Actively partner with Operations personnel to ensure regulatory compliance, and consistent, effective EHS program implementation throughout global manufacturing.
  • Contribute to the development of a global EHS vision and Long Range Plan strategy for global manufacturing & supply.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining EHS standards, policies, systems and methods for EHS related activities.
  • Devise legal and regulatory strategies to minimize liability, support business growth, and enhance operational flexibility.
  • Collaborate with P-Co leaders to understand trends, issues, and implications to the business. Collaborate closely with the AbbVie corporate EHS resources on all issues related to global EHS.
  • Position is responsible for safety, process safety, environmental, energy, occupational health, contractor safety, loss prevention, risk management, industrial hygiene, emergency response, moving to zero EHS impacts, incident investigation, EHS training, high level presentations, etc.



  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, environmental, occupational safety, or Industrial hygiene is required, and a Master's degree is preferred.
  • 15 years of EHS experience with a minimum of 10 years supervisory /managerial experience is required.
  • Extensive technical expertise in EHS, and plant level experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience leading a staff of senior-level EHS professionals is required.
  • International experience and ability to travel globally as needed.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Position requires strong team leadership experience involving cross-functional participants.
  • Must have a positive track record of establishing and maintaining effective relationships with both internal and external clients and customers.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully negotiate with senior management, peers, customers, regulators and governmental officials.
  • Must have experience managing budgets and other financial responsibilities.
