Position Title: Research Associate II

Reports to: Executive Director, Virology

Status: Regular, Full-time

About Assembly: Assembly Biosciences (NASDAQ symbol ASMB) is a clinical-stage biotechnology company advancing two innovative platform programs: a Hepatitis B-Cure program consisting of a new class of oral therapeutic candidates for the treatment of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and a novel class of oral synthetic live biotherapeutic candidates, which are designed to treat disorders associated with the Microbiome. We pride ourselves on creating a culture and work environment that is scientifically driven, ambitious, and collaborative. We encourage the diversity of thought that leads to great innovation and are looking to add to our dynamic team people who are driven to transform the lives of patients.

The HBV pipeline consists of a lead program in multiple global Phase 2a studies; a 2 nd Generation program entering Phase I late this year, and a 3 rd program approaching clinical candidate selection. We expect this pipeline to represent a backbone therapy for increasing cures in HBV and can be envisioned as a foundation of the company's research in virology globally.

We believe our Microbiome platform represents the best in class approach to developing biopharmaceutical agents from live biotherapeutic products. Our lead programs in GI are nearing the first IND/Phase Ib later this year for Ulcerative Colitis; this program is part of a partnership we established with Allergan in 2017 with a total value of up to over $2.8 Billion. Our internal pipeline of other disease areas in consideration for advancement that are wholly owned by Assembly and will represent first in class or best in class microbiome programs in areas such as Immuno Oncology, Liver Diseases, and many other areas of high medical need.

Assembly is headquartered in Carmel, Indiana, while the R&D headquarters is in South San Francisco. The Company also has a microbiome manufacturing facility in Groton, CT, and a research office in Shanghai, China. The Company has a strong balance sheet having recently raised $166 million, bringing its cash reserves to approximately $250 million - and thus positioned well to build the next phase of Assembly toward global development and commercialization of our innovative medicines in HBV-cure and the Microbiome.

The Research Associate will work as a member of the Assembly Biosciences biology team at our South San Francisco campus. The right candidate will support our HBV pre-clinical drug discovery programs in a multi-disciplinary fast-paced team environment.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Supporting the development of methods in anti-viral research
  • Troubleshooting challenging methodologies
  • Interpreting various experimental outcomes
  • Efficiently communicating scientific data within the company

Qualifications include:
  • B.Sc. or Ms degree in life sciences
  • Two (2) years or more of laboratory research experience, industrial R&D preferred
  • Independent, motivated, and proactive individuals with desire to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Proficiency in optimizing in vitro and/or cell-based assays
  • Extensive experience in mammalian cell culture
  • Knowledge of state-of-the-art molecular biology techniques and approaches including molecular cloning, ELISA assays, cell-based reporter assays, protein expression and purification, and (RT)qPCR
  • Extensive expertise in ensuring safe laboratory practices and BSL standards
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly develop new technical skills
  • Ability to present basic concepts and detailed scientific data to diverse teams and management
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, molecular cloning programs, and GraphPad Prism software
