The Automation Engineer is a key member of the Operations Technology team supporting automation systems at the Syracuse manufacturing plant. The primary role of the automation engineer is to design and lead implementation of engineering solutions for process equipment controls, hardware, device integration, and server support for the production control systems. The role will work directly with process experts in determining automation requirements, developing specifications, implementing hardware/software strategies, testing designs, providing 24/7 support for manufacturing systems, and working safely and efficiently in a high compliance environment.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and execute innovative process control solutions for continuous improvement for control of the manufacturing operations
  • Understand Process Flow Diagrams, Standard Operating Procedures, and Manufacturing Batch Records to design appropriate controls system programming
  • Partner with cross functional teams to understand user and functional requirements
  • Create test plans and execute test strategies to ensure accuracy of programming
  • Collaborate and assist third-party contractors, where necessary, to ensure system requirements and specifications documentation meet user requirements
  • Provide supervised on and off-hour (24/7 on-call) support for automation systems and control software
  • Provide training of automated solutions with operations staff to ensure understanding how the automated software programs functions as well as automation colleagues for support
  • Adhere to all plant safety procedures

Education/Experience:
  • Bachelor's of Science or equivalent experience in Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field
  • 1+ years process controls programming experience in Distributed Control System (DCS) or Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) languages
  • Experience with computing hardware and communication systems including PCs, servers, thin clients, and networks


Required Skills:
  • Proficiency with computers and Microsoft business applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
  • Experience with DCS and/or PLC programming language package; Emerson DeltaV and Rockwell Control Studio 5000 is a plus
  • Must be a hands-on individual, willing to take initiative, as well as ability to effectively work in a multi-discipline team environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Experience with SQL, C#, JAVA, HTML, XML is a plus
