Job Details

Materials Science & Engineering Group is a part of Drug Product Science & Technology Department at Bristol-Myers Squibb. The scientists in the Materials Science & Engineering Group have exciting opportunities to work in dynamic, cross-functional team environments to help identify, characterize and successfully transition drug candidates from discovery through clinical development and ultimately manufacturing.

The group is primarily responsible for small molecule materials selection and knowledge generation in alignment with drug substance and drug product requirements including:
  • Selecting form, material option and defining powder property criteria.
  • Investigation of structure-property relationship to aid drug substance and drug product development.
  • Fundamental knowledge to inform risk and support form and powder property control strategy
  • Solid state characterization of drug substances and drug products and their key intermediates.

The group is seeking a scientist with strong background and in depth hands on experience in X-ray crystallography, single crystal and powder X-ray diffractions, and other common solid-state characterization techniques.

Responsibilities include and are not limited to the following:
  • To take a proactive role in developing and applying novel solid-state characterization and crystallography based methods in solving complex pharmaceutical materials science problems, for example, polymorphism risk assessment, co-crystal/salt development, powder property prediction.
  • To determine the crystal structures of small molecule drug candidates to provide insights into the relationship between physicochemical properties and molecular packing and intermolecular interactions in the solid-state and how this may impact drug substance and drug product development.
  • To perform solid state characterization of drug substances using various analytical techniques such as PXRD, TGA, DSC, Raman/IR spectroscopy, PLM and DVS.
  • To maintain crystallography laboratory instruments and coordinate with instrument vendors on instrument trouble-shootings and services
  • To conduct crystallization/recrystallization experiments small and/or poor crystallinity samples
  • To keep track of innovation and new technology in the field of pharmaceutical materials science and crystallography and collaborate with internal and external partners.
  • To interface effectively and build dynamic collaborations with the teams in Research & Development and Process Chemistry to ensure alignment in lead optimization, candidate selection, early stage formulation and API delivery.
  • To provide mentorship to junior scientists on day-to-day performance, technical guidance and career development.

Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Science, Materials Science or a related field with 3-5 years of relevant work experience.
  • M.Sc. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Science, Materials Science or a related field with 7-10 years of relevant work experience.
  • In-depth experience and expertise in single crystal & powder X-ray diffraction, crystallography, crystallization, form selection and solid-state characterization.
  • Experience in computational methods in crystallography and crystal structure prediction (Materials Studio, Crystal Explorer or related programs) is a plus.
  • Hands on experience in crystallization/recrystallization is highly desirable.
  • Established knowledge in physical and solid-state chemistry of organic molecules.
  • Knowledge in early stage formulation and biopharmaceutics assessment is beneficial.
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, collaboration and communications skills with a high level of technical independence and creativity.
