As a leader within the Global Strategic Sourcing (GSS) team, this Director of GSS, Supporting Operations Manufacturing be responsible for over $500M spend and directly oversee six Senior Managers responsible for Direct Material categories. In this capacity, this leader will be responsible for driving the development and implementation of robust category strategies which will deliver improvements in quality, savings, and continuity of supply. This leader will partner with the External Supply organization within Amgen to manage supplier contracting, negotiations and performance. He / She will also be responsible for performance management and people development.

Primary Responsibilities

Reporting to the Executive Director of R&D and Operations Global Strategic Sourcing (GSS), this leader will perform the following:
  • Lead engagement with business partners to influence business strategy leveraging supply market insights and align sourcing strategies
  • Champion a three-year pipeline of savings and value plans in alignment with category and business strategies to deliver sustainable productivity
  • Collaborate with Business Partners to deliver year over year productivity
  • Contribute to continuous improvement in sourcing processes, tools and operating model
  • Develop team capabilities

Strategic Contribution
  • Develop and manage strategy for overall operations manufacturing external spend within GSS
  • Be a trusted advisor to SVP's / VPs / EDs of External Supply, Manufacturing, Quality and Device Development
  • Translate GSS business plans into objectives for the Operations Manufacturing Sourcing Team and align operational plan with functional business plans
  • Influence and develop broad global programs and initiatives for operations manufacturing
  • Be a sourcing expert with strong financial acumen
  • Serve as a thought partner and actively challenge work to deploy the most comprehensive and creative solutions; remove barriers for team to ensure its ability to execute
  • GSS decision maker for category/functional sourcing strategy and supplier selection

  • Bring Industry/business function-specific knowledge and experience
  • Customize sourcing strategy to drive value in specific functional environment, including legal & regulatory context
  • Initiate/build industry peer relationships
  • Provide support, mentorship and guidance to shape the category strategies of direct reports

Basic Qualifications

Doctorate degree and 4 years of directly related experience


Master's degree and 8 years of directly related years


Bachelor's degree and 10 years of directly related experience


4 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Diverse Global Sourcing/Procurement experience within and external to the Pharma industry
  • Broad knowledge of the market forces shaping a customer's business context (e.g. supplier base, legal and regulatory environment, sources of competitive advantage)
  • Demonstrated experience in identifying and utilizing full set of sourcing levers to drive value for customers
  • Ability to conduct benchmarking to address cost, quality, risk and innovation considerations
  • Ability to provide thought leadership and actively shape strategy

Team Management & Change Management
  • Independent self-starter and able to motivate others to accomplish ambiguous tasks
  • Ability to lead teams in a matrix organization, across geographic and functional reporting lines
  • Ability to lead, coach, and mentor direct reports
  • Demonstrated track record of identifying root causes to issues and proactively problem solving
  • Change management experience with large and complex organizational transformations
  • Demonstrated success in partnering cross-functionally
  • Ability to own and strengthen relationships with key customers and to champion change

  • Knowledge of sourcing, contract negotiations, and supplier management

  • Ability to analyze, summarize, and present insights based on the needs of the audience
