Senior Data Engineer - Manufacturing Sciences Cell Culture


The Vacaville Mfg. Sciences (MS) group is dedicated to providing scientific and technical support to the Vacaville mammalian cell manufacturing operations, from cell culture, harvest, purification to drug substance formulation and storage.  The MS group works in collaboration with Manufacturing, Process Development, Quality, and other technical and business functions in order to ensure efficient and safe drug substance manufacturing processes for the production of multiple recombinant proteins.  MS is responsible for process monitoring and data analysis, receiving new processes from Process Development or other manufacturing sites, process performance troubleshooting, maintenance of the process validated state and ongoing process improvement.  We are looking for a Data Science and Engineering leader with training and experience in BioProcess / Biochemical Engineering.

The open position is for a Data Engineer with responsibility for:

  • Design, configure and deploy data acquisition systems used by department staff to organize and analyze process information, enable digital transformation for the site
  • Drive the real time monitoring and analyzing of process data for commercial manufacturing process, and enable the predictive/adaptive data analysis.

Specific responsibilities for this position will include (but are not limited to):

  • Provide technical leadership in the design, development, maintenance, and improvement of non-GMP tools to support process monitoring and data analysis (for lab and plant operations). 
  • Directly support and provide guidance to junior staff for troubleshooting and issue resolution of site specific developed software for data acquisition, archiving and analysis.
  • Train and build the cross group data team. Increase data engineering and data science acumen in department. Interact with site and network subject matter experts (SMEs) as needed to develop/build tools for data acquisition and data analysis. Champion new technology evaluation.
  • Lead prototype and proof of concept initiatives and contribute to supporting data necessary for change implementation.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams to execute against defined design requirements.
  • Contribute to and set direction for network teams dedicated to data system implementation and process stewardship.
  • Technical steward of cell culture process with the focus of process monitoring

In addition to core responsibilities, the successful candidate may be asked to perform additional technical assignments.

Who You Are

  • B.S. or higher degree in Data Science, Computer Engineering, or Computer Sciences, Chemical or biochemical Engineering
  • A minimum of 5 years work experience
  • Experience and demonstrated proficiency with programming languages (e.g. Visual Basic, C#, SQL, SAS JMP, R, Javascript) and process data analytic platforms
  • Extensive practical and theoretical expertise in statistical process control and multivariate data analysis techniques
  • Good understanding of cGMPs particularly as they relate to the operation, validation and maintenance of computer-controlled systems
  • Knowledgeable in manufacturing scale recombinant protein production operations
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently as well as in teams. Excellent organization and communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Demonstrated experience in leading cross-functional teams and championing the implementation of complex technical changes/process improvements
  • Ability to support international meetings within the Roche network (early morning/late evening) 
  • Knowledge in one or more of the following software platforms is highly desirable: OSIsoft, Inc - PI server and client tools, Oracle server and client tools, Microsoft Visual Studio, and associated scripting language and data visualization tools (e.g. Tableau, Spotfire)
