Responsibilities
Research Scientist - Computational Systems Biology

Elanco Animal Health is looking for a computational systems biologist to join a growing interdisciplinary global informatics team. The ideal candidate will possess broad knowledge of tools and techniques for modeling and interpreting biological networks and how they change over time. The primary focus will be application these tools to build robust models of microbial ecosystems to drive disease characterization and target identification and validation for novel nutritional therapeutics development. This position sits in the computational sciences hub of the Elanco Research Labs, a multi-disciplinary core focused on discovery and early phase (pre-clinical) research programs. In this role you will be expected to:
Responsibilities:
  • Develop and apply computational strategies for the development of novel probiotics, prebiotics, digestive enzymes, and other nutritional, chemical, and biological interventions for modulating microbial communities and host-microbiome communication
  • Build and model network dynamics of microbial communities from microbiome, metagenome, metatranscriptome, and metabolomics datasets
  • Develop visualization platforms for microbial network and time-series data
  • Organize and large volumes of omics (genomics, metabolomics) data and oversee the design and maintenance of back end data management workflows
  • Integrate omics data with clinical or other complementary data
  • Participate as a consultant on the design of studies where microbiome data will be collected
  • Develop models for monitoring and optimization of fermentation-based production in research and scale-up applications
  • Develop strategies for identifying key regulators of microbial community structure
  • Develop strategies for understanding complementarity of both disease and therapeutic modulation as they affect the organization and dynamics of microbial communities
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external collaborators
  • Attend and present your work at scientific conferences
  • Actively participate in global communities of practice at Elanco

Basic Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in relevant life sciences or computational sciences domain (e.g. systems biology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, microbiology, computer science, statistics)
  • Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States. Lilly does not anticipate providing sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B or TN status) for this employment position.

Additional Skills/Preferences
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, capable of conveying technical information in a clear and thorough manner
  • Demonstrated ability to work with highly skilled teams in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, and technical setting
  • Demonstrated experience with systems biology tools for network modeling (WGCNA, flux-balance analysis, master regulator analysis, causal networks, graph-based approaches)
  • Expertise in principles of microbial ecology
  • 3 years postgraduate experience preferred
  • Familiarity with experimental & empirical approaches (ideally high throughput) for testing computational predictions (i.e. must be able to interface with these experimental teams)
  • Experience with common workflow automation, scripting, and programming platforms (e.g. KNIME, Python, C++)
  • Ability to work as an independent contributor/consultant on global, interdisciplinary teams driving microbiology research
  • Ability to work closely with colleagues in genomics, bioinformatics, cheminformatics, data analytics, and scientific computing to develop and implement long-term informatics strategies in key functional areas
  • Programming/scripting expertise as required for developing and optimizing computational methods, workflow automation, and data analysis
  • A record of scientific leadership and innovation as demonstrated by publications, presentations, and/or patents
  • Ability to travel globally up to 10% of the time
