Job Details
• Lead Parkinson's disease (PD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) discovery research efforts from target identification and validation to preclinical discovery characterization and clinical candidate nomination
• Develop and execute a research strategy to establish a sustainable and innovative pipeline in PD and ALS with a strong emphasis on human genetic insights
• Enhance the scientific reputation of Amgen and increase the external visibility in the PD and ALS areas by establishing impactful external research collaborations, participating in and presenting at key external meetings and publishing in peer-reviewed journals
• Build seamless collaborative partnership with Alzheimer's disease therapeutic team, and other Neuroscience groups, to maximize resources and eliminate operational redundancies
• Ensure a highly effective partnership with functions in Therapeutic Discovery, Translational Sciences, Clinical Development, Process Development and Commercial and effectively position preclinical development candidates with these key stakeholders
• Participate in business development efforts resulting in the acquisition of innovative assets and/or enabling technologies that enhance the PD and ALS discovery research pipeline
• Recruit, develop and retain world class scientists, building a strong research team as evidenced by pipeline productivity and external scientific reputation
• Effectively represent Amgen by presenting the company's capabilities and technologies and value of the PD, ALS and Neuroscience pipeline to external constituents
• Ensure that Amgen derives its sense of purpose from the needs of the patient and that all key decisions are made from a patient-centered perspective
Basic Qualifications:
Doctorate degree and 4 years of Scientific or Research experience
OR
Master's degree and 8 years of Scientific or Research experience
OR
Bachelor's degree and 10 years of Scientific or Research experience
AND
4 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources
Preferred Qualifications:
• PhD or relevant higher degree, with 8+ years of experience in a translational academic setting or the biotechnology/pharma industry and with specialization in Parkinson's disease (PD) and/or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
• Track record of innovation in the discovery of therapeutics for PD or ALS with a strong emphasis on leveraging human genetics
• Established scientific reputation in the field as evidenced by publication track record
• Knowledge of clinical development in PD/ALS or related area
• Demonstrated ability to recruit, lead and motivate a team of scientists, and to be actively engaged in their career development
• Interacts effectively across organizational boundaries at both the local and global level deploying relationship building and influence skills
• Possesses ability to shape product development and to make difficult decisions even in the face of potential resistance
• Track record of taking intelligent risks and willingness to be held accountable
• Avoids bureaucracy and enables a rapid, flexible and innovative working environment
• Communicates effectively with employees, colleagues and the broader external neuroscience community
• Confident self-starter with a strong work ethic
