This Sr Engineer position reports into the Drug Product Technologies department within Process Development in Thousand Oaks, California. Amgen offers the opportunity to be at the interface between research, global development and manufacturing to ensure that these molecules become medicines. Responsibilities will include:

• Lead the development and implementation of state-of-the-art automated systems and technologies, which will be applied to support advancements in Drug Product formulation and process development and to drive greater streamlining of existing workstreams.

• Apply scientific and engineering principles (e.g. chemistry, fluid dynamics, statistics, modeling, etc.) to develop, characterize and implement automation, high throughput screening, formulation, process, and analytical technologies.

• Apply hands-on automation design/customization expertise (mechatronics, hardware, software) to advancements of Drug Product development.

• Demonstrate science-based critical thinking and resilience in advanced troubleshooting, e.g. in hypercare and in-depth characterization of complex robotic systems.

• Lead data science efforts to streamline dataflow, automate analysis, and advance data visualization tools to rapidly derive insights and enable effective decision-making.

• Enable seamless integration of new technologies and innovation into existing workstreams through a user-focused design and development approach.

• Partner with process teams to ensure clinical and commercial pipeline deliverables are met on schedule and at a high quality.

• Author/review technical documents: technical protocols, technical reports, regulatory documents, SOPs, etc.

• Identify opportunities and lead initiatives to innovate to increase the speed and efficiency of work execution, data analysis and visualization.

• Operate well in a matrixed environment. Collaborate successfully cross-functionally to implement technologies and solve technical challenges in support of large and small molecule modalities across the Amgen network.

• Effectively and consistently communicate with management, cross-functional partners and relevant stakeholders on progress towards milestones, risks and strategies forward.

• Interface directly with vendors to drive 'right-first-time' solutions and improve reliability and performance of automated instrumentation.

• Coordinate effectively with process teams, Lab Operations, Asset Management, Facilities and vendors to manage instruments and workflows.

The Sr Engineer will operate in a fast-paced, matrixed environment and collaborate successfully cross-functionally to implement technologies and solve technical challenges in support of large and small molecule modalities across the Amgen network. In addition, effective management of interactions with technology vendors and suppliers will be important in achieving objectives on schedule.

The Sr Engineer will need to stay current on the latest developments/trends in the industry and scientific community to foster innovation and to meet future business needs.

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate Degree or Doctorate Degree completed by June 2019


Master's Degree and 3 years of Engineering and/or Operations experience


Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of Engineering and/or Operations experience


Associate's degree and 10 years of Engineering and/or Operations experience


High school diploma/GED and 12 years of Engineering and/or Operations experience

Preferred Qualifications:

• Degree in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Chemistry, Pharmaceutics, Mechanical Engineering or related discipline and 5+ years of relevant experience

• Experience in automation, high throughput screening, and GMP systems

• Familiarity with Drug Product process development

• Strong project management skills including the ability to manage and prioritize one's project resources (material, manpower, time, etc.).
