Amgen is seeking a Sr. Associate Software Engineer who will work on our Enterprise Engineering and Analytics ( EEA) organization. The Engineer will report to the Senior Manager Information Systems and will work out of either our corporate headquarters in Thousand Oaks, CA or Amgen Capability Center in Tampa, FL.

The Engineer will be part of the Enterprise Engineering and Analytics ( EEA) organization and will be accountable for the delivery and adoption of Reference Data Platform, and will be responsible for delivering business value through client projects, partnering with the business on creation of vocabularies, taxonomies, ontologies, and growing the value of the reference data platform.

Primary responsibilities include:
  • Work with Business and Client IS to model and develop vocabularies/taxonomies/ontologies for specific applications and use cases
  • Develop enterprise level vocabulary frameworks for internal and external vocabulary content usage
  • Develop and evolve the Reference Data Platform service offerings. Develop service improvement and expansion roadmaps
  • Own vocabulary management software and service delivery
  • Define, document, and manage service processes
  • Perform research and development of new capabilities. Perform technology and service model scanning for new ideas and technology applications
  • Perform emerging technologies evaluation and scanning for new ideas for applying the emerging technologies
  • Develop training, roadshow materials, and outreach events to increase the adoption of various solutions developed

Basic Qualifications:

Master's degree


Bachelor's degree and 2 years of Information Systems] experience


Associate's degree and 6 years of Information Systems experience


High school diploma / GED and 8 years of Information Systems experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Education/Work Experience
    • Degree in Computer Science, Information Science, Information Management or related field
    • Minimum 2 years' experience and demonstrated success in taxonomy / ontology development and management
  • Experience with terminology management platforms (e.g. Smartlogic Semaphore, Schemalogic, Top Braid)
  • Experience writing SQL and SPARQL queries
  • Experience using Informatica
  • Search Experience
    • Implementation of search and/or auto-classification systems
  • Text Mining/ Semantic Technology Experience
    • Experience with Semantic technologies and Java programming
    • Demonstrated experience with OWL, RDF, Ontology Repositories, and SPARQL
  • Life Science Experience
    • Background in healthcare and/or clinical sciences and/or life sciences a plus
    • Familiarity with healthcare taxonomies (UMLS, SNOMED, MedDRA and/or ICD9/10)
  • Attention to detail and ability to deal with ambiguity and change.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Penchant to learn about new technology innovation and creativity in applying to business problems
