The Biotransformation group in DMPK-BA has an open position for a Senior/Principal Scientist to lead drug metabolism studies to support drug discovery and development. The selected candidate will be responsible for designing and conducting ADME investigations, interpret results, and apply knowledge to drive the pipeline and answer key scientific questions. The candidate will collaborate across various disciplines within AbbVie including DMPK, chemistry, biology, toxicology, pathology, clinical and regulatory to support biotransformation.

The individual is expected to have a high level of practical experience performing in vivo and in vitro biotransformation studies, analytical method development, metabolite profiling, handling radioactive compounds, technology development and possess strong written and oral communication skills.

Duties will be focused on laboratory work but could be expanded to broader duties based upon interest, ability, and project needs

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Design, perform, interpret, and report appropriate data from in vivo and in vitro studies for identifying metabolite structures and associated pathways
  • DMPK subject matter expert and provides clear data interpretation and strategy to DMPK colleagues, project teams and management
  • Routinely operate LC-MS/MS instrumentation, including maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Writing or contributing to study reports and regulatory submissions.
  • Keeps well-informed of literature; Evaluate new methods, technologies, study designs and equipment.
  • Utilizes expertise to direct projects and is visible outside of functional area
  • Candidate will accept supervision of associate scientists- people management is required
  • Provide training, development and guidance to staff.

Basic:
  • Motivated Ph.D. in life sciences with 5-10 years, MS with 7-12 years relevant academic or industry research experience in small molecule development.
  • Expert in drug metabolism processes, including method development, metabolite profiling, metabolic processes, Mass Spectrometry and related techniques
  • Previous DMPK experience driving candidates from drug discovery through development
  • Experience writing regulatory documentation is preferred
  • Understanding of drug metabolizing enzymes, transporters, and pharmacokinetic principles is preferred.
  • Understanding the utility of modeling as a prediction tool is preferred.
  • Advanced training with radio-active material is preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently with minimal supervision in managing multiple projects and priorities and work well within a team
  • Strong presentation and written/verbal communication skills.
