Amgen is searching for a Director - Environment, Health & Safety - Safety. This role will be based on the main corporate campus in Thousand Oaks, CA.

The Director will execute world class safety programs in our dynamic business environment. The director will provide vision and strategy for site Safety initiatives and is responsible for supporting senior management on safety and health matters affecting the business and implementing programs to improve health and safety performance.

Primary duties of this role will include:

• Leadership - They will interface effectively with executive management, obtain their commitment and buy in to proposals. In addition, the Director will integrate Safety into the business.

• Governance - mature governance process with key clients and facilitate senior governance meetings.

• Change agent - Drive Safety improvement cross functionally through communication with key stakeholders and functional peers.

• Safety Management - Implements a management system which ensures that Safety is a key component of site activities. Implements safety and health standards and provide oversight of safety practices. Influence line management to ensure that Safety is managed by line management as a core skill. Implement CAPA program to ensure actions are taken in a timely manner for effective close out of findings from incidents, risk assessments, inspections and audits.

• Incident management - Implement injury prevention programs to drive down injury rates to world class levels. This includes incident investigation and root cause analysis, to identify and address the underlying causes of incidents and reduce injuries.

• Risk Management -Risk assessment for various aspects of safety and capable of implementing a program at all levels of the facility.

• Safety culture programs - Implement Amgen safety culture program to integrate Safety as part of the day to day operations. Knowledge and experience of implementing behaviour based safety programs.

• Safety Programs - Implement Amgen's Safety programs and ensure Amgen requirements are followed. For example:

Engineering safety - Permit to work, Lock out tag out, confined space entry, cranes and hoists, electrical, pressure, working at heights
  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • Managing hazardous substances including flammable and combustible materials
  • Industrial hygiene, biosafety and ergonomics
  • Fire and life safety
  • Emergency response
    • Regulations - Implement systems to ensure compliance with applicable Safety regulations.
    • Training - Implement Safety training strategy for Amgen staff & contractors.
    • Supervision - Capable of managing senior level staff and/or technical personnel in multi-tiered organization.


International travel is required- up to 10% annually

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 4 years of Safety experience

OR

Master's degree and 8 years of Safety experience

OR

Bachelor's degree and 10 years of Safety experience

AND

4 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications:

• B.S. degree in environment, safety, industrial hygiene, technical, scientific or engineering or equivalent experience

• Advanced degree strongly preferred

• 12 years of experience developing and implementing Safety programs within a biotechnology/pharmaceutical company

• Extensive applied knowledge and understanding of Safety principles and practices, regulatory standards, and requirements in context of business activities

• Experience in implementing Safety management system (OHSAS 18000)

• Experience of practical integration of Safety into business practices

• Competencies to include: Leadership, team building, strong communication and executive influencing skills, action oriented, self-starting, program development and project management

• Able to communicate effectively in English, at all levels of the organization, in a verbal and written format

• Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software systems

• Good technical & business writing skills
