The AbbVie Experiential Internship Program

As an AbbVie Experiential Intern, you'll participate in a paid, ten to twelve-week summer program that is focused on providing students with robust projects throughout the summer. As an intern, you will be located at our corporate headquarters in north suburban Chicago, with housing and shuttle services for eligible students.

Department Overview - Pharmacovigilance& Patient Safety (PPS)

The PPS organization works collaboratively and strategically with colleagues across the product lifecycle to identify, evaluate, understand and communicate the safety profile of our drugs to protect patients worldwide.

The Medical Safety Evaluation (MSE) department plays a critical role in evaluating safety data relevant to AbbVie. The MSE team is a high-profile and high-impact team of physicians and other health care professionals that works in close collaboration with other medical and non-medical colleagues across the company. MSE physicians requires an in-depth medical knowledge and an understanding of basic epidemiology concepts to contextualize safety data. As a member of the team, you are at the forefront of ensuring safety of patients across the world who receive AbbVie drugs.

Assignment Details

The MSE intern will play a critical role in operationalizing the 2019 goal for the Internal Safety Advisory Groups: adopting consistent methodology across AbbVie for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data required for a robust analysis of safety issues. During this internship experience the physician intern will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with clinical development physicians, with clinical operations colleagues, and colleagues in statistics. The MSE-Intern will actively participate in at least one advisory group and will lead the analysis and interpretation of a safety issue. This experience will allow the MSE intern to interact closely with colleague within, and outside of PPS to understand concepts of benefit and risk of drugs and application of these concepts in clinical practice as well as in public health.

This internship experience will enable the physician-intern to understand the role and relevance of safety physicians in a pharmaceutical setting and the global impact of their work - on clinical practice as well as public health.


  • Completed at least one year of college education before beginning internship
  • Currently enrolled and in good-standing at an accredited college
  • Must be enrolled in school the semester following your internship
  • Minimum Cumulative GPA: 3.0/4.0
  • Graduate Level Student currently enrolled in MPH (or equivalent) programs.
  • Candidate should have completed medical school, and therefore should understand medical concepts, and research methods applied in a health care setting. They should also be capable of communicating complicated clinical concepts.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. on a permanent basis without requiring sponsorship (students on an F1 visa with CPT can be accommodated).
