Summary
Position Summary:
Under general supervision, assists Vivarium Management in maintaining the operations of the facility and performing animal care procedures. Begins mentoring technicians while demonstrating exemplary competencies and behaviors. Knowledge of applicable regulations regarding proper standards of animal care and use in a research environment required. General understanding of "The Guide". Excellent communication skills required.
Responsibilities:
• Performs basic care of research animals for experimental purposes: daily observations to check animal health status and environment; reports changes in environment and/or animals; changes and cleans cages, equipment, water bottles and food
• Unpacking and housing animals upon arrival
• Performs husbandry and maintenance duties; Conducts monthly sanitation of equipment and facilities.
• Maintain accurate inventories and record of animals, supplies and equipment. Provides
records as necessary to Vivarium Management.
• Provides guidance to Animal Care Technicians. May assist in training new hires regarding facility procedures and practices. Assists Vet Services, as needed. Able to work with semi-rigid isolators and/or the specialized facility equipment.
Requirements
Education and Experience:
HS Diploma or equivalent technical certificate. A minimum four years of experience working with animals in a research environment and AALAS ALAT Certification is preferred. Advancement to LAT or LATg certification is desirable.
Work Environment:
Position requires working closely with animals. Some noises may be associated with this position. Ability to lift 30 pounds required.
