AbbVie is currently seeking an experienced EHS professional to direct the vision, strategy and execution plan for the Commercial business unit EHS team. As Director, EHS- Commercial, you will have significant EHS responsibility and accountability for EHS practices that impact approximately 10,000 commercial employees at numerous sites and in the field across the globe. The primary goals and objectives of this position are to protect office and field employees from injury and illness through the prevention of vehicle crashes and injury resulting accidents. Responsibility includes global fleet safety management which represents a significant risk and cost for AbbVie as it relates to personnel and vehicle assets, protect company facilities and capital assets through the implementation of effective loss control programs, and to minimize regulatory exposure through implementation of effective compliance programs and assurance review programs. Position has responsibility for EHS performance at all AbbVie commercial locations globally.
Responsibilities:
  • Partner with the AbbVie senior management team (R&D, Operations, Commercial, and Headquarters), Fleet Management, and the Global Risk Management teams to provide consistent and effective commercial EHS programs throughout the world. Responsible for developing and maintaining AbbVie EHS global standards, policies, systems and programs applicable to commercial operations.
  • Through a global team of direct reports, ensure that systems are in place to enable commercial operations to operate in legal and ethical compliance with regard to global EHS issues.
  • Provide EHS leadership and direction for senior commercial leaders at corporate, regional and affiliate levels through the use of performance updates and personal interactions.
  • Build relationships with internal and external key partners to minimize regulatory and financial liabilities, support business growth and enhance marketing flexibility of Commercial.
  • Represents AbbVie externally on matters related to commercial EHS with external regulatory agencies and non-governmental organizations throughout the world.
  • Compiles and analyzes statistical data including root cause analysis and corrective action/remediation plans for the purposes of reporting to senior AbbVie management, senior affiliate and regional management, as well as external regulatory agencies.
  • Develops qualified non-EHS personnel and EHS professionals to ensure compliance and program needs are met in each affiliate.
  • Provide creative, achievable and practical EHS solutions including environmental sustainability for AbbVie. Provide business perspective, strategic and tactical direction to develop and implement commercial EHS initiatives in the AbbVie EHS Long Range Strategic Plan.
  • Lead EHS aspects of emerging issues (product development, acquisitions/divestitures regulatory changes, etc.) and changing business strategies.
  • Position has direct responsibility and accountability for EHS performance and fleet safety performance for AbbVie's global commercial operations. Operating vehicles throughout the world represents one of AbbVie's highest risk jobs.
  • Develop and maintain a positive culture, programs, initiatives and systems to prevent significant vehicle crash incidents, and to reduce injuries, occupational illnesses, environmental and energy waste at all 80 commercial sites. Develop and maintain a regulatory compliance mindset in order to ensure EHS regulatory compliance at all AbbVie commercial operations.
  • Provide leadership, direction and management of all EHS designated personnel (professional and non-professional) throughout AbbVie commercial operations. Develop/mentor regional EHS leaders to improve technical and leadership skill sets, develop succession plan for EHS talent, and support the hiring process for regional/facility level EHS professionals.

  • BS degree in engineering, environmental science or industrial safety is required. MS degree is highly desired.
  • Position requires a minimum of 15 years experience in the safety and environmental fields with at least 5 years in Commercial EHS. Strong experience in the field of Fleet Safety is required.
  • Requires strong leadership skills, with 5+ years of people management experience required.
  • Position requires a broad understanding of local, regional and global EHS regulations, practices, cultures and vehicle driving environments.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required, along with the ability to challenge the organization in a manner that maintains trust and respect.
  • Ability and willingness to travel globally as needed. 10% travel
