Job Details

The Clinical Services Program's primary mission is to perform sequential studies using samples obtained from patients with cancer, AIDS, chronic granulomatous disease or other diseases associated with immunologic dysfunction, as well as to monitor viral load in patients with HIV.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
The Research Technician will prepare isolated immune cells provided from human blood samples for cryopreservation.

This includes:
  • Login and processing of blood samples to include separation of plasma (serum)
  • Density gradient separation for recovery of viable lymphocytes or use of magnetic bead procedures for subsets of immune cells
  • The project involves work in support of research primarily from cancer patients enrolled in cancer or other treatments under development and is performed in a BSL-2 laboratory.
  • In addition to processing of samples, the position entails interaction with NIH scientific and administrative personnel
  • Ordering and inventory of reagents and supplies, transmittal of cryopreserved samples to the central repository facility and preparation of shipments for return to the NIH-Bethesda campus.
  • Secondary responsibilities include providing backup support to process and cryopreserve non-human primate clinical samples that may receive treatments for Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV) (performed in BSL-2* room with BSL-3 laboratory practices); preparation of cell pellets for DNA/RNA extraction; cell culture; staining and fixation of samples for flow cytometry; and supporting immunoassays including ELISA.

The position requires working an alternative schedule (9:30AM-6PM M-F).

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
  • No experience required with the Bachelor's degree
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Use of aseptic technique
  • Ability to follow established Standard Operating Procedures with a reproducible outcome
  • Knowledge of general laboratory skills
  • Ability to organize individual workflow to efficiently multi- task since each clinical protocol may have unique processing requirements
  • Proficiency with computers
  • Must be able to accurately enter information into laboratory database programs
  • Requires good basic math skills
