Job Details

The Basic Science Program (BSP) pursues independent, multidisciplinary research programs in basic or applied molecular biology, immunology, retrovirology, cancer biology or human genetics. Research efforts and support are an integral part of the Center for Cancer Research (CCR) at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNLCR). With the scientific direction by Dr. Giorgio Trinchieri, the Microbiome & Genetics Core undertakes the characterization of microbiome samples by NextGeneration (NextGen) Sequencing to determine composition and variation as influenced by immune, genetic, and host health factors. The Microbiome & Genetics Core provides support across the spectrum of processes, from nucleic acid isolation to bioinformatics and statistical analysis. This position is located on the NIH Bethesda campus.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

The Bioinformatics Analyst will be responsible for both the computational handling and analysis of NextGen Sequences in multiple output file formats for multiple purposes, and for experimental input as part of a team to characterize microbiome samples.

This position will be filled at either the Bioinformatics Analyst III or IV level
  • Will perform database management and utility programming
  • Will use sequence data formats and processing from NextGen platforms (Illumina, 454, etc.)
  • Will use common bioinformatics programs and databases in automated bioinformatics workflows
  • Will use, maintain, or modify databases for storage of sequence and biosample information (SQL, MYSQL, or other database languages)
  • Will program/script in C, C++, Perl, Python, and Shell
  • Will use knowledge and experience to use bioinformatics tools for sequence identification, evaluation, and assembly (BLAST, BOWTIE, BWA, etc.)
  • Will perform statistical data analysis, evaluation, and visualization
  • Will use experience and ability in molecular biology to design and conduct experimental studies in molecular genetics

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Bioinformatics Analyst III must have:
  • Possession of an Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in a related field (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
