Vertex Pharmaceuticals is seeking a cellular biologist with expertise in translational research to join its Biomarkers Discovery team in Translational Medicine, located in Boston, MA. The mission of the Biomarkers Discovery team is to identify novel patient selection, pharmacodynamic, and clinical response biomarkers during the research phases of drug discovery and deliver clinic-ready assays that can be used to enable clinical trials. The successful candidate will be a strategic, hands-on scientist that designs and executes biomarker research to identify novel biomarkers, develop biomarker assays, and aid in understanding of MOA in support of discovery programs. The candidate will interface closely with other members of Translational Medicine, Clinical Development and the Research Project team.  The candidate will also work with Research and Development teams to procure and test human tissues to aid in biomarker characterization and assay development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Using disease model systems, discover and develop biomarker measures to assess target engagement/biological response to compounds
  • Identify responder populations and discover patient selection biomarkers
  • Characterize biomarkers in human tissues
  • Deliver clinic-ready assays to measure biomarkers in target and surrogate tissues
  • Serve as a member of project biomarker teams, providing expert input and leading biomarker discovery
  • Identify opportunities for biomarker-focused external collaboration and lead collaborations where applicable
  •   Qualifications:
     
  • PhD in Neurobiology, Cellular Biology or relevant field with 2-4 years post-degree experience
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively across a global matrixed organization.
  • Excellent record keeping
  • Experience utilizing genomics, proteomics, flow cytometry, molecular and/or cellular techniques to evaluate disease physiology and/or drug effects on disease process
  • Experience with fit-for-purpose assay development
  • Experience procuring and utilizing human tissues preferred, but not required
  • Industry experience preferred
