Summary
We are seeking a process driven, operationally and technically skilled high performing facility manager with GEM experience to lead our technical operations for the Veterinary Sciences (VS) organization in Redwood City, California. As such you will experience a culture that believes in making the animal care and use program a model for the industry. Position Responsibilities

Responsibilities include mentoring and managing facility supervisors and operations technical staff with the goal of insuring that they are technically competent and effective problem solvers.

Conduct performance management and career development for direct reports.

Provide strategic oversight of the facility operations including personnel, equipment and space resource allocation in animal husbandry operations.

Responsible for participating in the development and implementation of policies and procedures on animal care, applying welfare regulations to assure compliance with institutional policies and federal mandates, overseeing strict adherence to all safety and environmental standards and coordinating departmental renovation and facility maintenance activities.

Participate in the coordination and completion of reports such as USDA Annual Reports, AAALAC Program Descriptions, census summaries and metric analyses

Leads site functional team to collaborate and communicate on resource allocation and utilization for Discovery Therapeutic Areas and scientific groups.

Additional responsibilities include oversight of the internal quality assurance programs for maintaining sanitation and biosecurity standards for animal husbandry.

Actively participate in the Management Leadership Team (MLT) in developing, analyzing and maintaining operational metrics to improve efficiency and effectiveness of the animal husbandry program.

Participate in the development of training programs for laboratory technicians in animal husbandry

Contribute to the alignment of global animal husbandry programs to be an industry leader in laboratory animal sciences

Cognizant of the physical, chemical and biological health hazards present within the animal facility and relate such findings to EHSS

Manages the daily operations of the breeding facility specializing in the production of GEMs.

Actively monitors quality of activities, operations, and projects, and makes day-to-day decisions related to production breeding and facility operations.

Works hand in hand with the Transgenic Modeling and other groups to develop an understanding of their needs and offer solutions related to the projects being managed.

Provides weekend and holiday supervisory and management coverage on a rotational basis.

Competencies - Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

The individual is required to have knowledge of GEM colony production breeding, experimental methodology, facility operations, and knowledge of regulations and guidelines that rodent breeding operations.

Must have mastery of all VS SOPs and a good understanding of related departmental procedures (EH&S, Facilities, etc.) and proficiency in integrating this knowledge with strategic objectives.

Understanding of regulatory compliance (i.e. USDA regulations and Animal Welfare Act) and accrediting guidelines (AAALAC and The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals) for facility operations.

Must have outstanding team building skills and demonstrated leadership and managerial abilities.

Experience - Responsibility and minimum number of years

Must have a history of consistent, sustained high-level performance, and typically attained with relevant experience in a GEM colony production breeding programs.

Must have an excellent understanding of research methodologies and requirements used at this site.

Must have an excellent understanding of research animal facility operation, to include animal welfare practices, husbandry procedures, animal health and veterinary care, enrichment program, and applicable regulations/accreditations (USDA, AAALAC, OLAW, and site/departmental SOPs).

Must have a mastery of facility operations and mastery of the regulations and guidelines that govern animal facility operations normally attained with a minimum of ten years relevant experience.

Must have ten years of experience in the biopharmaceutical industry

Qualifications:
  • Bachelors of Science (BS) in life sciences with a minimum of 15 years of relevant experience is required.
  • Individual must have AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) level.
  • AALAS certification at the Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) is preferred.
  • Masters of Science (MS) in Molecular Biology or Laboratory Animal Science and/or a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) is preferred.
