Job Details

The Director Purchasing Compliance is accountable for the strategic and operational compliance of AbbVie's third party relationships. This includes governance and guidance for internal and partner-support resources involved in all aspects of purchasing activity across the enterprise - from sourcing and contracting, through operational procurement and payment, concluding with working capital optimization.
Supporting over $13B of spend, strategic responsibilities include anticipating risks associated with third party activities and proactively designing compliance requirements, tracking performance against those requirements, and mitigating risks for the corporation. This role partners with colleagues responsible for purchasing systems and training, to ensure users and third party partners understand their responsibilities and have technology support to perform their roles efficiently and effectively.
The role requires strong technical and operational expertise, the ability to work effectively across functional stakeholders at all levels of the company, and the professional judgment to represent the company's purchasing compliance considerations with external oversight organizations. Influence skills are paramount.
This role reports to the Vice President, Global Purchasing Operations, Compliance and Systems. Management responsibilities include planning internal reviews, ensuring documentation and compliance materials are kept current with policy and technology changes, supporting corporate financial and compliance audits, and building a culture of accountability and compliance into all purchasing activities.

Key Responsibilities Include:
  • Assess purchasing compliance risk across the corporation and with key partners annually and monitor emerging and changing risk patterns. Design review processes and mitigation programs to cover significant risks.
  • Plan, direct, execute and report purchasing compliance worldwide at operating locations and third party providers.
  • Regular reporting regarding compliance matters to the Vice President, Global Purchasing Operations, Compliance and Systems.
  • Periodic reporting regarding compliance matters to the Vice President, Treasury Operations, Corporate and Business Unit Controllers, Internal Audit and Corporate Compliance leadership.
  • Planning strategic purchasing compliance requirements, aligning resources and cross-functional support to achieve compliance objectives, reporting results and recommending mitigations to partners throughout the geographic and functional organizations, including purchasing, delegated groups, and functional groups performing various activities aligned to the purchasing process.
  • Engagement with internal and external oversight organizations on purchasing compliance as appropriate.
  • Oversight of periodic review and benchmarking, and, as appropriate, revision and enhancement of Purchasing Compliance function.
  • Manages an organization of 5 - 6 compliance professionals in a global organization.

  • Bachelor's degree from a four year college or university. A graduate degree is desirable.
     CPA, MBA or law degree is a plus.
  • 12+ years of related work experience global experience in the life sciences industry, with knowledge of the unique business and compliance risks in the healthcare industry.
  • A balance of audit experience and experience working in operational and compliance oriented roles is preferred.
  • Experience with third party partner organizations is preferred.
  • Experience and knowledge related to healthcare compliance, healthcare institution revenue cycles, government reimbursement mechanisms, pharmaceutical sales & marketing programs, pharmaceutical supply chains and distribution practices, investigation techniques and anti-corruption laws is preferred.
