Job Details
KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervise a team responsible for high throughput and low throughput nucleic acid extractions
- Organize and delegate duties and workload daily
- Provide supervision and management of laboratory staff
- Utilize molecular biology expertise to check the quality of work performed, troubleshoot any issues during extraction of existing protocol and communicate to the laboratory staff as required
- Implement new protocols in concert with the technology development team, with an eye towards throughput, automation feasibility, and process consistency
- Be skilled in using, testing, and troubleshooting automated liquid handlers
- Ensure proper documentation of all laboratory processes performed by the team
- Participate in all facets of the work done by the team
- Address any non-conformances or opportunities for improvement by taking appropriate corrective actions in consultation with management, development teams, and other relevant staff members
- Liaise with the staging laboratory to review the QC results of extracted samples
- Use of LIMS for sample management
- Hire and train new staff as required
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Possession of a Bachelor's degree or Master's degree from an accredited college or university (according to CHEA) in a field related to biomedical research. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
- In addition to the educational requirements, a minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of related molecular biology experience
- Demonstrated experience in staff management and staff training
- Ability to carry out a wide range of laboratory techniques and analyses, and troubleshoot with minimal supervision
- Careful attention to detail
- Excellent written and oral communication-ability to communicate clearly and effectively with staff and other groups within CGR
- Proven ability to prioritize time and workload
- Computer literacy (Microsoft Office products, general computer proficiency)
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- DNA/RNA extraction from a variety of sample types
- Good working knowledge of LIMS
- Experience with robotics (use and maintenance, preferably with Tecan and/other DNA extraction systems)
- Experience with FFPE extractions
- Experience troubleshooting issues that arise with extraction of nucleic acids from blood, buccal and tissue samples
