The Search & NLP team in the Analytics & Knowledge Management (AKM) organization is seeking a four-month graduate co-op student to Data Science techniques, engineering, and software programming to develop and deploy applications related to Search and NLP use cases.

The scope and opportunities of the co-op will include:
  • Design, develop, and maintain crawlers and document processing/enrichment pipelines that create search indexes using data from structured and unstructured data sources.
  • Push the envelope on current NLP technology and develop new algorithms for our Enterprise Search & NLP platform.
  • Work on Deep learning programming with Python/Tensorflow/Keras or similar libraries and frameworks.
  • Design, develop, and provide implementation of compelling data visualizations, dashboards, tools, and utilities using Open Source technologies (Java/J2EE, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, D3, etc.) in support of search-based applications.
  • Collaborate with business partners and business analysts to translate business requirements into technical requirements.


The co-op will be embedded in a team of experienced Java/ Python developers and will be expected to interact with the business partners from various other functions across our organization. The co-op will be responsible - with guidance from subject matter experts - code implementation, and interaction with stakeholders as well as other IS functions. The co-op will be an integral part of the team and help shape the team's NLP strategy through the outcome of this work.

Relocation in the form of a miscellaneous allowance will be provided for eligible candidates.

Basic Qualifications

Amgen requires that all individuals applying for a grad internship or a co-op assignment at Amgen must meet the following criteria:

18 years or older

Graduated with a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a 3.0 minimum GPA or equivalent

Completion as a first year graduate student before internship starts and currently enrolled in a Master's program for a Masters internship from an accredited college or university

Enrolled in an accredited college or university following the potential internship or co-op assignment

Must not be employed at the time the internship starts

Preferred Qualifications

Degree concentration(s) in Computer Science and Data Science

Proficient in data analysis and data mining techniques.

Solid foundation in natural language processing and machine learning

Experience with GitHub, CVS, SVN (source code control systems).

Experience with Agile methodologies and DevOps.

Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

Strong analytical skills for effective problem solving.
