Manager, Scientific Communications

General Position Summary/Purpose:

The Manager, Scientific Communications (SciComm) will be a member of the Medical Affairs Scientific Communications team reporting to the Associate Director, Scientific Communications. Under guidance of Associate Director, Scientific Communications (SciComm), the candidate will be responsible for developing and creating scientific content to support communication initiatives of the PCYC Scientific Communications team. Scope of content development includes the creation of slides for field medical tools, scientific advisory boards, and written/verbal response documents to unsolicited requests for medical information. This also includes managing the overall development, approval, and maintenance of SciComm resources (e.g. slides, standard response letters) used by the Contact Center, as well as internal customers such as the disease area leads and field medical teams. This individual will be expected to function independently in decision making for routine issues related to literature searching, data analysis and synthesis into content. The individual is expected to be able to identify and review higher risk or complex issues with assigned manager.

Key Accountabilities/Core Job Responsibilities:

  • Works with colleagues and AD SciComm to develop content for SciComm resources (e.g. slides, standard and custom responses) to meet internal and external customer needs.
  • Participates in strategic initiative planning and implementation and assists assigned manager with execution of strategies and initiatives.
  • Identifies and anticipates potential problems impacting ability to meet deadlines or execute initiatives in a timely manner; proactively develops and implements methods of improvement and resolution.
  • Critically evaluates literature, interprets complex data, and adapts delivery of information to a variety of audiences.
  • Maintains in-depth understanding of product knowledge, associated disease states and treatment guidelines, labeling, and relevant data for assigned therapeutic area.
  • Routinely shares information across SciComm team to ensure standardization and consistency of departmental activities and deliverables.
  • Remain compliant with applicable Corporate and Divisional Policies and procedures. Recognizes issues having the potential for compliance, legal or regulatory implication and discusses with assigned manager.


Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of clinical trial methodology, statistical concepts, and independent evaluation and interpretation of complex literature.
  • Solid clinical understanding of oncology/hematology (hematology preferred) disease states and the implications of treatment
  • Proficient in scientific literature searches, analysis, and evaluation
  • Strong critical thinking skills to identify issues, suggest alternatives, and negotiate effective solutions.
  • Ability to manage projects with vendors and contractors, as well as internal support staff while using resources effectively and efficiently
  • Ability to create scientific presentations on clinical data
  • Communicates clearly and succinctly both verbally and in writing and effectively negotiates with counterparts from cross-divisional functional areas
  • Exceptional organization and project planning skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to relate and work with a wide range of people to achieve results
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast paced environment
  • Minimum of 1 year work experience in the pharmaceutical industry OR minimum of 2 years of licensed clinical practice experience OR ASHP Accredited Pharmacy Practice Residency or Drug Information Residency or equivalent training i.e. PDP, Fellowship.
  • Previous experience in hematology and / or oncology (hematology preferred)
  • Previous experience working with Field Medical/MSL organization, Medical Communications, or related Medical Affairs experience preferred
  • Ability to develop an in-depth understanding of disease states, product knowledge, product labeling, and relevant data to apply knowledge to daily job functions.
  • Advanced degree (Pharm.D., Ph.D., MD) preferred or MSN with extensive Hematology/Oncology experience


Abilities:

On a continuous basis, sit at desk for prolonged period of time at company facility to intermittently answer telephone, file, fax, or copy documents, and write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means. Walking and lifting up to 20 pounds may be required. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
