The Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission by providing a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and services that are focused on the design, generation, characterization and application of genetically engineered and biological animal models of human disease, which are aimed at the development of targeted diagnostics and therapies. LASP contributes to advancing human health, developing new treatments, and improving existing treatments for cancer and other diseases while ensuring safe and humane treatment of animals.

KEY ROLE/RESPONSIBILITIES

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be expected to lead in several technology development efforts using DNA/RNA editing approaches. Opportunities will arise to strategically apply newly developed technologies onto problems of high biological interest through collaboration with other laboratories.

Amongst the areas that will be of focus (but not limited to):

  • Building and applying novel genome editing “libraries”
  • Improving multiplexed gene editing and perturbation
  • Engineering genetic models within various cancer types


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Possession of PhD degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in a biomedical research discipline (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
  • In addition to educational requirements, completion of at least three (3) years of postdoctoral research and training is required for appointment at this level
  • Basic molecular biology skills - PCR, cloning
  • Experience using gene editing (Zinc finger nucleases, TALENs, or CRISPR technologies)
  • Experience in maintaining and manipulating cultured cells using sterile techniques
  • Meticulous note-taking habits to maintain accurate and precise records
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills - primary author publications and/or oral presentations
  • Excel in a highly collaborative research environment
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a clearance


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

 

  • Illumina sequencing - preparing DNA sequencing libraries /data analysis
  • Basic programming in python or R
  • Familiarity with bioinformatic tools
