Advances in scientific and technological research are opening up new, promising treatments for previously difficult to treat diseases, increasing the demand on already constrained healthcare budgets. The challenging economic and political environment is leading payers, and other market access stakeholders, to demand better outcomes at lower cost to overall health system. The escalating tension between cost and value means that the bar is higher for proving added benefit with RWE and patient relevant outcomes a focus in an increasingly competitive environment.

To succeed in this environment, we (AbbVie) need to fully understand market value drivers, evaluate strength and weakness of health technologies used in the disease, define integrated positioning (access and commercial), identify the evidence required for Pricing, Reimbursement and Access (PRA), and work with the evidence generating functions to ensure that evidence generated will support successful PRA negotiations.

Global Market Access & Pricing (GMAP) function's overall objective is to drive remarkable impact by achieving timely access for patients with optimal price, time to reimbursement and level of access. GMAP Therapeutic Area Teams are responsible for leading, orchestrating and enabling cross-functional collaboration to develop competitive integrated access strategies and plans (Value Proposition, HTA strategy, Pricing and Reimbursement strategy & plan, and Policy, Advocacy and other Engagement plans).


This role will be responsible for leading a team of strategic market access leaders to drive the overall PRA strategy and execution for Immunology assets before regulatory approval and commercial launch.

Market in scope includes the U.S., (all channels - Commercial, Medicaid and Medicare), as well as other international key markets, including EU5, Japan, Canada, Brazil, Russia, China, Taiwan and Korea.

This position reports to Vice President, Immunology, Global Market Access & Pricing.

Key responsibilities include:

PRA Landscape Assessment

  • Monitor and track Immunology access environment (e.g., funding flows, stakeholder mapping & archetyping) and key healthcare trends and their impact upon market access stakeholders
  • Anticipates PRA trends and identify disease area policy priorities and objectives to enable patient access

Market Access Value Drivers and Relative Competitive Assessment

  • Identify unmet needs and the associated value drivers from an access perspective and based payer archetypes, and anticipate evolution of the value drivers over time
    • Develop relative competitive assessment of products/technologies used in treating the disease

Integrated Positioning and Market Access Critical Success Factors (CSFs)

  • Lead and develop the optimal access positioning by developing scenarios, and use qualitative and quantitative data/insights to make the appropriate trade-offs
  • Drive development of the Market Access CSF to ensure unique and differentiated access

Gap Assessment & Integrated Evidence Planning

  • Provide oversight for market access gap assessment as a part of the cross-functional "Gap Assessment & Integrated Evidence Planning" process
  • Ensure that PRA evidence requirement that will support optimal access is embedded into the evidence generation plans by collaborating with HTA strategy & planning and other evidence generating function (clinical development, medical affairs and HEOR)

Value Proposition (Scientific Platform & Brand Story)

  • Lead and orchestrate cross-functional collaboration to develop integrated access strategy that incorporates all access domains (Value Proposition, HTA strategy, Pricing and Reimbursement strategy & plan, and Policy, Advocacy and other Engagement plans)
  • Generate compelling payer value proposition along with value story and messages that align with scientific platform and brand/asset positioning/strategy and that are tailored for each market access stakeholder archetype
  • Integrate pricing and reimbursement strategy into the overall brand positioning and strategy
  • Value Demonstration and Communication
  • Lead synthesis of all available resources and effectively communicates the value of the product in terms of health, costs, and societal benefits based on stakeholder needs and drivers.
  • Lead development of Global Value Dossier by working with Medical Affairs and HEOR, and co-creating with core markets

Advance AbbVie Market Access Organization

  • Provide coaching, mentoring, guidance, and feedback to direct reports to enable them to excel on the job and meet key accountabilities, and proactively engage team on development planning
  • Proactively engage and track key internal and external talents as a part of AbbVie Market Access talent development strategy
  • Driving the creation of an access mindset across AbbVie by supporting Access Academy and other communication initiatives
  • Ensuring capabilities across access functions are developed and maintained along the product lifecycle

  • Advanced degree in business, science, health economics or other related field is required


  • The candidate must have at least 10 years of progressive experience preferably in a variety of market access related areas (including market access, managed care marketing, payer support, health economics, marketing, pricing and reimbursement, or payer policy)
  • Professional training, knowledge and experience in a number of therapeutic areas is preferred
  • Experience leading cross functional teams with ability of selling ideas and influencing cross-functional partners
  • Demonstrates strategic enterprise thinking by seeing the picture, finding innovative, and being able to connects the dots or unrelated concepts
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of market access to support the business objectives
  • The candidate must have comprehensive knowledge of pharmaceutical commercialization and drug development process
  • The candidate must be comfortable in international markets and have the ability to function in multinational and multicultural environments.
  • Experience in other functional areas such as sales, product marketing, planning, clinical development, regulatory affairs, medical affairs, analytical roles, HEOR, finance
  • The candidate must have strong analytic, presentation and writing skills
  • Appreciation and understanding of policy implications on patient access to innovative medicines is helpful
