Responsibilities

Doudna/Fellmann Research Associate/Lab Manager

The Laboratories of Professors Jennifer Doudna and Christof Fellmann at the Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco invite applications for a Research Associate / Lab Manager position. The labs are within the Gladstone Institute of Data Science and Biotechnology, and are focused on developing innovative CRISPR-Cas tools through a better molecular understanding of the vast CRISPR-Cas biodiversity, and applying these tools to overcome human disease by pioneering novel delivery and genome surgery approaches to tackle the Achilles' heel of specific genetic and somatic diseases.

The lab manager will support and enable an effective lab environment that can develop CRISPR-Cas genome editing platforms for biomedical applications. Specifically, the lab manager will build up and maintain the laboratory inventory, order research supplies, purchase new equipment and coordinate service of equipment, and manage tissue culture reagents, buffers, and other consumables. Additionally, this person will be involved in performing research techniques and procedures aligned with the laboratories' aims of developing and applying novel CRISPR-Cas tools to overcome human disease.

They should be passionate about participating in the basic discovery around biomedical applications of CRISPR-Cas genome editing. The lab manager will make sure that all incoming laboratory members complete appropriate lab safety training, maintain lab organization, and are familiar with the processes necessary for full functioning of the lab. They will additionally act as laboratory safety officer and will ensure compliance with all standards for the disposal of hazardous and regulated waste. They will support inter-laboratory collaborations, including material and information transfer and documentation.

This person should have excellent interpersonal communication skills, organization skills, and computer and software skills. They should also demonstrate efficiency and effectiveness in keeping a laboratory productive and running smoothly. Familiarity with project management and inventory/ordering management software is a plus.

This person should have experience with standard molecular biology techniques including PCR, gel electrophoresis, western blot, microscopy, cell culture, etc. An aptitude and drive to learn and perform molecular and cell biology experiments is essential.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a bachelor's degree in a related field of study (e.g. Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Molecular Biology, or Genetics). Higher degrees in a similar field are optional.

Prior lab experience required.

Prior lab management experience preferred.
