Lab Operations Supervisor/Manager

The Lab Operations Supervisor/Manager will work closely with scientists to develop and implement systems needed to support the operation and organization of a pharmaceutical development laboratory. This laboratory is new, and therefore this is an opportunity to be a part of building these systems from the ground up. This is a hands-on role and requires the person to roll up their sleeves and take ownership of the day-to-day activities of organizing the laboratory. This position is full time located in Pleasanton, CA.

Responsibilities:

The operations supervisor/manager will have responsibility for three major areas of oversight, i) lab operations including hazardous waste management, purchasing and receiving, and general organization, ii) maintenance and calibration of equipment, and iii) environmental health & safety. S/he will be expected to collaborate with scientists in Analytical, Process, and Formulation groups, as necessary.

Lab Operations

  • Maintain overall organization within the laboratory including management of inventory of chemicals and consumables
  • Set up and coordinate purchase and receiving of all laboratory supplies by working with vendors as needed and assigning expiry date labels before use
  • Set up and coordinate removal of hazardous waste by external vendors
  • Coordinate preventative maintenance and calibration schedule and any troubleshooting of equipment
  • Maintain the laboratory in a clean and working condition including sharing the responsibility with the scientists with cleaning of glassware or large equipment
  • Ensure staff compliance with standard operating procedures and best practices for laboratory
  • Manage all shipping and receiving activities. Coordinate lab shipments to/from company while maintaining safe shipping and handling standards

Facilities

  • Manage temperature-controlled storage of chemicals and equipment emergency alarm systems
  • Serve as safety coordinator and primary lab emergency contact
  • Support the Safety Officer in enforcing compliance with safety and lab procedures among all lab personnel
  • Act as a liaison with building management for any issues that relate building utilities to laboratory operations

Environmental health and safety (EH&S)

  • Work with the Safety Officer to coordinate EH&S program for chemical Safety, emergency response and potent compound management per federal, state and local regulatory requirements
  • Maintain regulatory licenses, permits and registrations with federal, state and local agencies (e.g., EPA, OSHA)
  • Manage hazardous waste collection per regulations
  • Develop written plans, programs, and training modules
  • Conduct Employee Risk Assessment, Workplace Hazard Assessment and all required training
  • Work with the Safety Officer in conducting incident investigations
  • Manage lab space decommissioning, as needed

Required qualifications:

  • 3-5+ years’ experience working in pharmaceutical lab or similar setting, preferably in a startup lab
  • Experience in managing routine laboratory chemicals and consumable materials
  • Ability to perform physical demands of the role, including lifting moderately heavy boxes, prolonged standing, pushing gas tanks, etc.
  • Must be willing to be on call for emergencies
  • Exceptional organizational, record-keeping and communication skills (verbal and written)

Preferred qualifications:

  • A.S. or B.S. degree in a scientific discipline desired but not required
  • Demonstration of handiness in previous work experiences
  • Experience overseeing lab safety and adherence to regulatory guidelines strongly preferred
  • Materials management experience a plus
  • Background managing hazardous waste program
