Job Details

AbbVie in the Bay Area is seeking a Senior Scientist with tumor stroma cell biology expertise to join an immuno-oncology team.

Oncology is a key therapeutic area for AbbVie, with a portfolio consisting of three marketed products - Imbruvica, Venclexta, and Empliciti - and a pipeline containing multiple promising new molecules that are being studied in nearly 200 clinical trials in 19 different types of cancer.

AbbVie has expanded its oncology hub on the West Coast, with three sites in the San Francisco Bay Area (Redwood City, South San Francisco, and Sunnyvale) focused on the discovery and development of novel oncology therapies. More than 1,000 AbbVie scientists, clinicians, and product developers with strong entrepreneurial roots work across these three sites. They combine their expertise in immuno-oncology, stem cells, and cell-signaling with their knowledge of bispecific antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), and covalent-inhibitor technologies to discover and develop novel cancer treatments. This position is based at AbbVie in the Redwood City, CA location.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

We are searching for a cellular biologist to join a talented team studying the numerous cell types that comprise the tumor microenvironment (TME), with a focus on stromal cell and immune cell biology. The candidate will perform in vitro and ex vivo studies in a well-supported and dynamic environment to advance TME biology and enable exciting new approaches to drug discovery and development. The research will encompass molecular, cellular, and preclinical studies relating to characterization of tumor and stromal cell interactions and the interplay of tumor-stroma-immune system cells.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Aligned with the overall goals of the team, design and execute creative in vitro and ex vivo experimental workplans, optimize and troubleshoot experimental details, and synthesize and present datasets to extract trends and infer hypotheses
  • Utilize broad technical expertise in cell biology, tumor cell biology, immune cell biology, and in vivo animal models to design in vitro, in vivo, and ex vivo experiments to expand understanding of tumor-stromal-immune cell interactions and illuminate potential therapeutic pathways
  • Establish novel functional cell-based assays based on readouts including proliferation, differentiation, cytotoxicity, activation, flow cytometry, mRNA expression, etc. with human and rodent cell lines and primary cell cultures
  • Utilize experience in modulating cells with inhibitors or activators of biological pathways as a way to probe tumor and immune cell biological pathways
  • Prioritize and manage collaborations with a broad range of technical experts in the area of tumor and/or cancer cell biology
  • Organize and document data and results in an electronic lab notebook, embrace global registration and inventory systems, utilize shared databases and visualization software to collaborate with all AbbVie Oncology Discovery teams
  • Articulate hypotheses, workplans, and results objectively to a variety of audiences in both oral and written communications
  • Demonstrate excellent ability to utilize all Microsoft Office software, GraphPad Prism, data visualization software, and aptitude and interest to train in other software programs when required for specific instruments

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Senior Scientist I: Bachelors, Masters, or Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Degree in Cancer Biology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Pharmacology, or a related field, with at least 10+ (BS), 8+(MS), or 0-4 (PhD) years of experience

  • Senior Scientist II: Bachelors, Masters, or Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Degree in Cancer Biology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Pharmacology, or a related field, with at least 12+ (BS), 10+(MS), or 4+(PhD) years of experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Be versed in the current state of the science of the tumor microenvironment and the interplay between immune cells and stroma and immune cells and tumor cells in multiple tumor types
  • Background in cell biology and experience with immunological cell assays
  • Expertise in immune and/or stromal cell analyses and assay development
  • Background in tumor immunology
  • Experience profiling large molecule and/or small molecule modulators of biological pathways
