The Molecular Characterization Laboratory (MoCha) is part of Leidos Biomedical Research's Clinical Research Directorate (CRD) at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. The MoCha Laboratory is responsible for providing high-level research in support of the NCI-Cancer Diagnostics Program (CDP) within the Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis (DCTD).

MoCha is charged with the development and application of genomic assays for use in medical research and diagnostics for DCTD-sponsored national extramural clinical trials.

  • Develop and maintain custom databases to catalog and track specimens through laboratory workflows
  • Develop and extend databases to manage and integrate complex data for multiple projects
  • Develop and maintain program code in adherence to established coding standards
  • Work closely with lab managers and staff to maintain and support databases
  • Coordinate and integrate software applications and databases within the larger group including the Bethesda, Frederick, and Shady Grove NCI campuses

  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree in computer/biomedical science/math-related according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in a related field (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
  • In addition to educational requirements, a minimum of four (4) years related experience
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance
  • Experience in Unix/Linux, Windows Operating System and SQL Server in a complex database environment
  • Experience with MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server or other relational database systems
  • Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, Perl, C/C++, php or Java
  • Ability to develop software that is modular and easy to maintain, extend, fix and port
  • Ability to identify and resolve cross browser and cross platform compatibility/connectivity issues
  • Knowledge of software development "best practices" e.g., gathering and managing requirements; detailed and regular documentation; software versioning; software testing

  • Experience in developing web-based application front ends utilizing valid HTML, cascading style sheets (CSS), and/or JavaScript
  • Familiarity with cloud computing environments, NoSQL databases, and/or genomics/genetics data management
  • Experience in data integration, database construction, application development and visualization
  • Experience and good working knowledge in the areas of cancer biology and bioinformatics
  • Experience with LabMatrix or other Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
