Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative aerobic bacterium commonly found in the environment. An opportunistic pathogen, it is a major cause of hospital-acquired infections, leading to significant morbidity and mortality. In addition to a number of virulence factors that aid in colonization and invasion, the bacterium expressed a number of antibiotic resistance genes. The aim of the project is to characterize the virulence factors and resistance genes of several common P. aeruginosa strains.
For this project, the student will be responsible for: (1.) designing PCR primers for detecting the presence of the virulence factors/antibiotic resistance genes; (2.) build upon already published functional assays to assess expression of the virulence factor under different growth conditions; (3.) determining the effect of neutralizing the virulence factor on bacterial growth and pathogenesis in cell-based assays using a variety of host cell types.

Position 2:
Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is the leading cause of hepatocellular carcinoma in the world, with over 400 million people infected worlwide. Regeneron is developing novel therapeutics for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B. The aim of this project is to develop therapeutics and assays for the treatment of HBV. The student will utilize various molecular biology techniques including DNA, RNA, and protein manipulation toperform in vitro work with HBV virus like particles and may generate stable cell lines for virus production.
