Job Details

Program Description:

The Nanotechnology Characterization Lab (NCL) serves as a national resource and knowledge base for all cancer researchers to facilitate the regulatory review of nanotechnologies intended for cancer therapies and diagnostics. By providing the critical infrastructure and preclinical characterization services to nanomaterial providers, the NCL accelerates the transition of basic nanoscale particles and devices into clinical applications.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Formulation Scientist
  • The Nanotechnology Characterization Lab (NCL) provides nanotechnology formulation and characterization services for universities, the pharmaceutical industry and other government programs (http://ncl.cancer.gov).
  • Will provide support for chemical synthesis, nanoformulation and scale-up to NCL's formulation customers
  • Will also assist in physicochemical characterization and development of new analytical methods for evaluating nanomedicines.
  • The duties of the position involve the evaluation of complex problems in the scientific area(s) which require conventional or novel approaches, often with the application of sophisticated techniques.
  • Scientists at this level of research are characteristically allowed substantial freedom to identify the best approach for studying the problem area and are expected to provide guidance to lower level research staff.
  • At the individual level their contributions are identified through independent authoring or co-authoring publications in scientific journals and by presentations at national and international meetings.
  • In a production or specialized service area, the individual should participate in the supervision, production, or testing procedures in larger segments of a complete production process.
  • Research: An individual at this level normally has made contributions by independently producing research work of such originality, soundness, and value as a significant contributor in the field; by authoring or co-authoring publications in scientific journals; and by presenting papers before national professional societies.
  • Production and Service: An individual who has demonstrated proficiency in developing test or production methods or protocols in an applied area.
  • Additionally, the individual has demonstrated an ability to manage a production operation or segment of a production operation.
  • An individual who has demonstrated proficiency in laboratory animal medicine.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by a responsible authority.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Possession of a Doctoral degree from an accredited college or university appropriate to biomedical research, or eight (8) years related experience in lieu of degree.
  • Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
  • In addition to educational requirements, candidates should have had two (2) or more years of competent, innovative research experience beyond doctoral training in a related field of specialty.
  • Proficiency in developing test or production methods or protocols in an applied area; demonstrated ability to manage a production operation or a segment of a specialized service area
  • An individual at this level normally has made contributions by independently producing research work of such originality, soundness, and value as a significant contributor in the field by authoring and co-authoring publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and by presenting papers before national professional societies
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Familiarity with drug development and the pharmaceutical industry; understanding of CMC for IND/IDE applications; some knowledge of drug metabolism-pharmacokinetics (DMPK)
  • Experience should include demonstrated synthetic and analytical skills with respect to the formulation of small molecules and macromolecules using nanotechnology-based drug delivery platforms
  • Experience with physicochemical characterization of nanoparticles using state-of-the-art instrumentation and methods such as SEC, MALLS/DLS, AFFFF, MS, TEM, NMR, AFM, HPLC, SANS and SAXS.
  • Experience preparing data summaries and scientific presentations in the form of lectures, posters and manuscripts.
