DIRECTOR, MEDICAL COMMUNICATIONS AND PUBLICATIONS, MEDICAL AFFAIRS

Position Summary:

As a senior leader, the Director, Medical Communications and Publications, Medical Affairs provides strategic vision, leadership, and management of scientific communication activities, with a primary focus on Publications and conference communications (expert, creative, and innovative input to ensure optimal dissemination of scientific data internally and externally). This position reports to the Vice President, Medical Affairs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Development of a comprehensive, globally aligned cross functional strategic publication plan and the delivery of the publications included in this plan, including participation in data analysis efforts, editing and preparation of publications for submission, while ensuring adherence to policies and procedures established by GBT, journals, and ICMJE
  • Translate medical strategies and objectives into actionable long-term strategic publication plans
  • Ensure endorsement of publication plan by governance bodies prior to execution; continuously evolve plan in conjunction with scientific landscape
  • Demonstrate the understanding of the disease area, medical strategies and objectives necessary to provide strategic input to a broad range of stakeholders on matters related to publication planning & data dissemination/disclosure
  • Implement effective and consistent strategies for engaging external expertise (e.g. Publication Steering Committee) to advise and shape publication plan strategy
  • Lead planning and executing all scientific content around relevant conferences, including meeting summaries and Medical Booth
  • Manage vendors to ensure deliverables are on time, within budget, and of high quality prior to subsequent internal review
  • Work collaboratively with internal functional partners on Publications and communications strategies as needed to enhance the value of GBT products
  • Build and lead a high performing, cross-functional Scientific communications team engaged in the planning, integration and execution of medical publication activities globally
  • Grow department, through development of SOPs / work processes and recruitment of additional key medical talent, when required
  • Support development of Advisory Board strategy and content development
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
  • Senior leader having over 10 years of pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry experience with 5 years in scientific communications (Publication experience strongly preferred)
  • PhD, PharmD or MD
  • Expertise in terms of clinical trial design, interpretation of scientific data, and communication via clinical/regulatory or medical affairs channels
  • Able to successfully communicate complex concepts and data to a variety of audiences
  • Able to work independently, with strong leadership skills, and effectively manage teams and projects
  • Strategic and analytical thinker with the ability to plan and design effective product life cycle strategies
  • Ability to negotiate and influence executive leadership and key opinion leaders in a variety of forums
  • Experience working in highly matrix environment across a broad range of functional areas and effectively collaborating with the Medical Affairs, Health Outcomes, R&D, regulatory, legal and commercial teams
  • Outstanding interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills with exceptional time management skills are required for this highly visible global position
  • High integrity, sense of urgency, an appetite to both individually contribute and to lead within and outside of Publications and communications functions, and a willingness to "wear multiple hats" and be flexible, resourceful
  • Ability to travel approximately 10 - 15% of time
