The SDI&O Automation Engineer is a key member of the site BMS IT team supporting automation systems at the Syracuse manufacturing plant. The role is generally responsible for working with process experts in determining automation requirements, developing specifications, leading large automation implementations, implementing hardware/software strategies, testing designs, providing 24/7 support for manufacturing systems, and working safely and efficiently in a high compliance environment.

1. Design and execute automation solutions for projects from conception to completion under minimal supervision.

2. Lead automation solutions and support in compliance with BMS quality standards under minimal supervision.

3. Become subject matter expert for upstream and/or downstream control systems

4. Provide supervised on and off-hour (24/7 on-call) support for automation systems and control software.

5. Work closely with manufacturing operations, MS&T, Facilities & Engineering, Supply Chain and Quality Control teams, other BMS internal resources & external engineers, contractors and suppliers.

6. Understand P&IDs, Process Flow Diagrams, Standard Operating Procedures to translate information into the manufacturing control applications.

7. Conduct all job activities in accordance with cGMP and EHS requirements.

Position Requirements:

1. BS or equivalent experience in Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field.

2. 4-6 years of pertinent control experience

3. Demonstrated experience working in regulated environment governed by multiple Regulatory Agencies (such as FDA, EMEA). Knowledge should include 21 CFR Part 11, Computer System Validation, and cGMP regulations.

4. Knowledge of products and technologies provided by major automation vendors, including: Emerson DeltaV, Rockwell Allen-Bradley, GE, or Siemens.

5. Technical problem solving and analysis skills.

6. Proficiency with MS Office tools (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)

7. Knowledge of process control methods and industry standards.

8. Ability to read and understand process design documents such as P&IDs, electrical schematics, and loop drawings.

9. Excellent written and verbal communication skill are required.

10. Must be a hands-on individual, willing to take initiative, as well as ability to effectively work in a multi-discipline team environment1. Demonstrated experience with:


- OSI's PI historian

- Computing hardware and communication systems that include PCs, servers, thin clients, Ethernet infrastructure. Knowledge of instrumentation busses (Foundation FieldBus, ProfiBus, DeviceNet, etc.)
