The Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases (NITD), relocated to Emeryville, California, is dedicated to fighting parasitic infectious diseases of high medical need in a dynamic working environment. NITD is an independent Institute within the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research (NIBR), and as such has full access to NIBR know-how and resources including the chemists of the Global Discovery Chemistry group and the structure based drug discovery group co-located in Emeryville. NITD is renowned for applying cutting-edge technologies to the discovery of high quality clinical candidates for the treatment of neglected diseases. The Institute has a highly collaborative culture and has close links with academic centers of excellence and a broad range of non-governmental and philanthropic organizations around the globe (Wellcome Trust, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Medicines for Malaria Venture and Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative). 

About the position: The successful candidate to this position will lead a team of research investigators and research associates with drug discovery knowledge and expertise. The unit will carry out all routine biological profiling activities spanning the entire spectrum of the drug discovery process from, biochemical/cellular assays development and high-throughput screening, to lead finding and optimization. 

Specifically, the candidate will:

• Work closely with the scientific leadership and the management team of the institute to ensure its overall function and success 

• Contribute to the institute scientific strategy and its compounds pipeline

• Play a key role in the coordination of drug discovery activities across disease areas and partners

• Design and implement high-throughput screening and routine biological profiling 

• Experience leveraging automation and robotics to optimize efficiency and ensure rapid and consistent data turn-around

• Ensure integrity/quality of data and support analysis and interpretation

• Support scientific input for patent filing and funding application 

• Monitor scientific literature and technological landscape to ensure relevance and contemporaneity

• Recruit, develop and manage talents

• Ensure proper operations of the group

• Ensure compliance with local and global standards in Health/Safety & Environment


Minimum Requirements

• Ph.D. in a relevant discipline with 5-10 years of experience

• Accomplished “drug hunter” with significant research experience in industry 

• Relevant supervisory / management experience of similarly sized teams

• Authored significant peer-reviewed publications 

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Innovative mindset and strong collaborative spirit 

• Positive attitude and “can-do” mentality  


Additional beneficial skills:

• Demonstrated experience in high-content imaging and FACS based screening is highly desirable

• Experience in anti-infective field and/or knowledge of parasitic diseases will be an advantage
