Director, Knowledge Management Lead - Scientific Communications

Scientific Communications, within the Medical Affairs department, works closely with various functional areas within the organization to communicate accurate, consistent and timely information regarding products and therapeutic areas. The Knowledge Management Lead on the Scientific Communications Team is responsible for overseeing and the overall management of Medical Affairs product and disease state expertise to allow for deep scientific discussions externally and consistent communications of key datasets aligned with the medical affairs strategy. Scope of responsibilities include the creation of the scientific narratives and communication platforms, competitive analysis and planning, creation of MAF competitive readiness planning and communication direction, and overseeing and directing internal education, training and congress data coverage. This is a leadership role with direct report management responsibilities. This position will report directly to the Director, Scientific Communications.

Key Accountabilities/Core Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop and oversee the execution the Scientific Communication platform with a cross-functional team to inform scientific publications, medical information, congress, medical education, field medical, internal training activities and that effectively represents the product's data and value proposition. Facilitate communications with cross-functional leaders (e.g. ClinSci, Safety Sciences) with the goals of transparency, and consistency, and with the goal of gaining alignment on core scientific statements comprising scientific communications.
  • Effectively partner with medical affairs leaders and subject matter experts (e.g. Head of Medical Affairs, Head of SciComm, Disease Area Leads) to develop and prioritize key messages to ensure consistent communications of key datasets aligned with the medical affairs strategy.
  • Develop and oversee the execution of the Medical Affairs Competitive Readiness Plan to inform scientific publications, medical information, congress, medical education, field medical, internal training activities. Translate competitor insights to impactful readiness plans and recommend adjustments or revisions to medical affairs actions and initiatives as needed.
  • Facilitate communications with cross-functional leaders (e.g. Commercial, ClinSci, disease-specific IBTs) with the goals of alignment on core strategy and communication direction comprising the competitive readiness plan.
  • Directs a team of medical professionals responsible for the overall product and disease knowledge and expertise of medical affairs, the scope of which includes congress data analysis and coverage, and all elements of the medical affairs internal education and training plan. Manages and develops individual and team performance while ensuring the team complies with regulatory and corporate requirements by guiding staff decision making.
    • Oversee core activities as it pertains to internal education & training, including but not limited to launch and launch-related trainings, high-impact data and competitor data education, trainings in support of medical initiatives and field initiatives, and knowledge enhancements on hot topics and key topics of interests.
    • Oversee core activities related to congress data coverage, including but not limited to congress preparation (e.g. pre-conference data searches, data review), onsite coverage and debrief, and post-congress congress activities (such as debriefs and pan congress insight trending and analysis).
  • Maintain expert understanding of product knowledge and labeling, associated disease states, relevant literature, treatment guidelines, competitor information, and marketing strategies and tactics for assigned therapeutic area(s). Assumes responsibility (up to 20% of time) for diverse and/or complex projects regardless of disease histology when needed.
  • Developing internal communication plans to engage key stakeholders and increase information sharing and transparency across the organization. Lead and manage ongoing and evolving workstreams for input on critical topics to proactively address gaps in communications and alignment. Develop and maintain effective means of ensuring transparency and feedback.
  • Provide scientific support at various congresses

Qualifications and Requirements (degree, certifications, etc. and other requirements):

  • Significant (7+ years) experience in industry medical/scientific communications. Specific prior experience in congress planning, education & training, field medical, and/or strategic scientific communications preferred.
  • Strong leadership, organization and time management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment
  • Self-motivated, team player, able to take initiatives and act independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Hematology/oncology preferred, but not required
  • 10-20% travel required
