Job Details

The Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission by providing a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and services that are focused on the design, generation, characterization and application of genetically engineered and biological animal models of human disease, which are aimed at the development of targeted diagnostics and therapies. LASP contributes to advancing human health, developing new treatments, and improving existing treatments for cancer and other diseases while ensuring safe and humane treatment of animals.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Ensuring the humane care and housing of research animals
  • Rodent animal husbandry including feeding, cage changing, housing, and monitoring of environmental conditions
  • Properly pick up, restrain, and transfer animals between cages
  • Daily health monitoring, mortality checks, and routine observations of large rodent colonies
  • Maintenance of animal room records
  • Operation of tunnel (cage) washer, rack washer, autoclaves, and other animal support equipment
  • Unloading of shipments and supplies
  • Facility and animal room cleaning and sanitizing
  • Utilizing computer skills for email, training, and basic data entry
  • Work schedule will include rotating weekend and holiday hours

Performs other related duties as assigned by a responsible authority. Handle a variety of laboratory animals, keep basic records, operate automatic washing and cleaning equipment. Lift up to 40-50 lbs., and wear respiratory protection equipment if necessary. Maintain good personal hygiene. Routine tasks associated with general laboratory animal care.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Possession of a High school diploma or equivalent. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
  • Ability to keep basic records.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and wear respiratory protective equipment as necessary.
  • Basic knowledge of computers.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a clearance.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with the handling of rodents, operation of cage and rack washing equipment, receiving and inventory, and general housekeeping.
