Purpose:

Medical Program Management (MPM) provides proactive and integrated planning, management, and reporting of Medical Affairs strategic and tactical plans, launch readiness, budget, trends, and risks through deep partnership with Therapeutic Area leadership and cross-functional stakeholders using standards, processes and tools to make a remarkable impact on patient's lives.

This position is a leadership role responsible for providing overall direction, process management, and organizational management of the Medical Project Office (MPO) to support the Medical Program Management, Medical Operations, and Global Medical Affairs organizations.

Responsibilities:

 

 

  • Develop, champion, and implement processes and tools to support the Medical Program Management and Medical Affairs Teams (MAT) to effectively deliver against the organization's strategic, tactical, and financial plans. Use project management tools and techniques to map decision making processes and decision points and leverage data visualization methods to provide relevant and consumable supporting information that maximizes value and accelerates business performance.
  • Lead development MPO tools, templates, processes, and communications. Navigate and anticipate upcoming planning processes and deliverables. Lead the development, management, and communication of Medical Affairs financial and project reporting as well as the overall integrated financial and planning calendar and key milestones to support the monthly and yearly project planning and budget cycles. Foster strategic initiatives to streamline reporting practices within Medical Affairs and across AbbVie.
  • Collaborate with appropriate functions (e.g. Development, PPM, Discovery, Regulatory, Commercial, Finance, etc and across Medical operations) to optimize work effort and resources expended to support LBE, budget, and planning cycles. Apply project management best practices to the creation, maintenance, and improvement of project planning tools and templates for control, monitoring, and continuous improvement across Medical Affairs including inputs and outputs. Interface directly with clients and management to address strategic plans for planning tools, templates, and enhancements.
  • Provide strategic direction to MPO staff. Create and maintain MPO strategic plan. Direct the coordination and management of resource tracking and forecasting tools and processes. Identify and lead initiatives for business process improvement focusing on staff, program management, and portfolio support. Understand dependencies between key tactics and milestones that comprise a program and ensure alignment to overall Medical Affairs strategies. Identify and secure project resources, delegate responsibilities and authority appropriately.
  • Act as a catalyst to remove organizational barriers for cross-functional initiative success. Provide mentoring and leadership in project management best practices to MPO team. Establish and enforce MPO standards. Build MPO capabilities to significantly enhance decision support solutions. Balance tradeoffs between system and process, define decision rights and roles, and build domain specific system skills within team.
  • Use advanced knowledge of industry data, advanced analytical, problem solving, and critical thinking skills to resolve business problems that align to organizational strategies. Ensure high quality data and on time delivery of Medical Affairs reports to various leadership, financial, and cross-functional stakeholders. Foster the use of industry standards and models for the collection, analysis, and reporting data, metrics, and KPIs. View data trends, problems, and challenges holistically considering impact across functional boundaries.
  • Apply strategic oversight for best practices in the creation, maintenance, and improvement of project planning and reporting processes to ensure that proper data is captured for control, monitoring, continual improvement, and accurate reporting. Direct and lead in-function and cross-functional teams to improve integrated project planning, tracking, and reporting while identifying and mitigating risk.
  • Frequent interaction across Medical Affairs and cross-functionally with VPs, Directors and line function management to coordinate collaboration and foster global project planning, tracking, execution, and process improvements. Support MPMs and Therapeutic Area leadership with project planning, tracking, resource management, and project information reporting. Direct, develop, motivate and coach staff. Basic:

 

 

 

 

  • Bachelor's Degree in a scientific or business related field is required. MBA Degree strongly preferred.
  • Project management certification (e.g. PMP) and Lean Six Sigma Belt strongly preferred.
  • Ability to think strategically and cross-functionally across Medical Affairs portfolio to identify opportunities and make connections to advance business deliverables and impact.
  • Applied knowledge of program management tools and processes (e.g. management of integration, scope, time, cost, quality, human resources, communications, risk and procurement).
  • Extensive experience with performance measurement and communication (e.g. metrics, dashboards, and data visualization).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team and ability to excel in a matrixed environment.
  • Experience should include at least 10 years of program management and/or process improvement related experience and at least 5 years of pharmaceutical experience.
