Job Description
Phylagen is developing a microbiome data generation and analytics platform with applications ranging from supply chain security to public health. We are bringing on a production lab technician for sample accessioning, sample prep, microbiome sequencing and related assays for our commercial service. You will be joining a diverse technology team that includes molecular biologists, data scientists, and chemists.

We are looking for an agile team player who is a fast learner with relevant experience that will allow them to contribute quickly. As part of a small company, you may be required to perform tasks in areas outside of your primary responsibilities.

  • Receipt and processing of samples to deliver high quality data to customers within given timeframes
  • Microbiome sequencing library preparation
  • Running Illumina next generation sequencers including MiSeq and HiSeq formats
  • Ensuring efficient use of lab resources
  • Maintain an organized and detailed digital lab notebook/database shared by all in the lab
  • Being a great teammate


  • B.S. in biology, molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or related field
  • 3yr+ laboratory experience
  • 1yr+ experience in a production lab setting
  • Experience using LIMS for sample accessioning and tracking
  • Experience running Illumina next generation sequencers including library preparation
  • Deeply familiar with analytical molecular biology techniques including gel electrophoresis, PCR/qPCR, spectrophotometry
  • Comfortable working in UNIX terminal
  • Comfortable working in a high-throughput lab including working with multi-channel pipettors, 96- and 384-well plates
  • Experience with aseptic technique for PCR
  • A keen aptitude toward laboratory instrumentation such as noticing unusual behaviors, troubleshooting common problems and working with tech support to keep things moving forward
  • Attention to detail, record keeping, schedule flexibility, teamwork and clear communication are keys to success
