Responsibilities
Position Description:
The Principal Research Scientist, Drug Delivery is responsible for framing the innovation strategy for and providing scientific leadership to drug delivery for solid oral dosage forms, parenteral small molecule and large molecule products, and novel innovative platform technologies. The scope includes process development, analytical, and formulation development for projects pursued internally, externally, and for due diligence and in-licensing assessments.

In this role, the Principal Research Scientist, Drug Delivery will be responsible for developing Elanco's drug delivery platforms using existing and novel technology platforms in close alignment with TSMS, Manufacturing, Regulatory and Quality to ensure robust processes are developed and commercialized. The individual in this role is expected to assess and bolster Elanco's innovation capabilities and capacity leverage commonalities across multiple formulations with small molecules and biopharmaceuticals. A substantial part of the capabilities assessment will include an assessment of cross-functional end-to-end process development, review, and execution. The Principal Research Scientist, Drug Delivery will also be responsible for working with team members to delivering key milestones for high priority R&D projects. Further, the incumbent shall provide coaching and guidance to PVST scientists pharmaceutical development leaders with regard to the development of novel drug products to ensure reliable delivery of innovation to meet unmet or undermet and customer needs.

Functions, Duties, Tasks:
Key Technical Deliverables

  • Develop Elanco's drug delivery platforms using existing and novel technology platforms in close alignment with TSMS, Manufacturing, Regulatory and Quality to ensure robust processes are developed and commercialized.
  • Enhance Elanco's Drug Delivery capabilities, including solid oral dosage forms, parenteral products for small molecules and biopharma products.
  • Contribute to and review relevant Regulatory submissions for relevant projects.
  • Build tools, systems, and business process to enable efficiency, effectiveness and quality in PVST and across development teams & partners in Research and TSMS.
  • New scientist recruitment and development of scientists
  • Enable compliance with regulatory, safety, and performance standards.
  • Facilitate efficient knowledge sharing across technical teams (Research, Development, TSMS) to ensure robust problem solving.
  • Identify key issues and propose solutions related to successful technology transfer of research scale processes developed internally or by third party collaborators to GMP manufacturing organizations
  • Effectively facilitate technology transfer between development collaborators and CMOs, as needed, to ensure delivery of adequate supplies of GMP-grade material necessary for clinical trials and commercialization
  • Complete Elanco deliverables in accordance with appropriate regulations and commitments to global regulatory authorities.

Basic Qualifications
  • PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Analytical Chemistry, Molecular Biology or related scientific field and 15 years' experience in technical drug development or drug product manufacturing/fermentation.
  • M.S in similar field and 20 years' experience
  • Experience in rational design and DOE


Additional Skills/Preferences
  • Extensive experience with a multitude of drug delivery platforms in the animal health industry
