AveXis is advancing cutting-edge science to treat rare and life-threatening genetic diseases starting with our clinical-stage, proprietary gene therapy candidate, AVXS-101. AveXis, Inc., a Novartis Company , is a clinical-stage gene therapy company, dedicated to developing and commercializing novel treatments for patients suffering from rare and life-threatening neurological genetic diseases. Our initial product candidate, AVXS-101, is our proprietary gene therapy product candidate currently in development for the treatment of spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA, Type 1, the leading genetic cause of infant mortality, and for the treatment of SMA Type 2. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, has granted AVXS-101 Orphan Drug Designation for the treatment of all types of SMA and Breakthrough Therapy Designation, as well as Fast Track Designation for the treatment of SMA Type 1. In addition to developing AVXS-101 to treat SMA Type 1 and Type 2, we also plan to develop other novel treatments for rare neurological diseases, including Rett syndrome (RTT) and a genetic form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) caused by mutations in the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) gene.

The Senior Director, Medical Trainingwill be responsible for establishing a Medical training curriculum at AveXis to onboard new hires and ensure consistent continuing education of the Medical teams in all regions (e.g., EMEA) about the overall industry, the disease states, and products addressing the therapeutic needs across current and future programs. The trainer will manage cross-functional training and educational needs. He or she will collaborate cross-functionally to lead, analyze, implement, and monitor effectiveness for fit-for-purpose training programs. Strong organizational leadership skills with scientific acumen and adult learning principles are required to enable success.

Responsibilities

  • Strategically design and adapt optimal training programs for onboarding and maintenance of skills sets and scientific and clinical expertise to ensure AveXis personnel, both at the home office and field, are providing the appropriate and consistent information and decision support for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Advance and maintain the scientific platform to ensure consistent messaging by AveXis on relevant topics.
  • Partner with marketing, sales and training leadership to assess, design and deliver training solutions to meet the objectives identified for the Medical team both in the field and in various regional locations.
  • Develop learning experiences by leveraging a variety of innovative approaches, including: blended, experiential, media based, instructor-led, 1:1 training, performance support, and other emerging technologies.
  • Evaluate and develop classroom curriculum and work with training leadership to keep training current and relevant for the field.
  • Responsible for submission, gaining of approval and continued maintenance of training resources.
  • Identify and assess current training needs to anticipate future/emerging needs.
  • Develop and maintains for staff retrievability materials such as training manuals, slide library, and other staff-supportive content as required by the business.
  • Formulate staff training schedules based on anticipated business cycle changes (process, system, products, therapeutic area/disease state, etc.).
  • Maintain keen understanding of training needs and stay current with industry trends to deploy most effective training methods for adult learning.
  • Manage the review of materials to incorporate all appropriate stakeholder requirements, and ensure approved, compliant training.
  • Establish and implement key metrics to track and communicate value and impact of learning initiatives to all stakeholders.
  • Update and track records to ensure all training and educational materials are current and relevant.


Qualifications

  • Graduate scientific degree (Neurodegenerative disease and/or pediatric specialty preferred).
  • Minimum of five to eight years of Medical Affairs experience required.
  • Proficiency in the drug development process (pre-clinical, to clinical, to commercialization).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including strong formal presentation skills.
  • Excellent planning and organization skills.
  • Proven work experience as a training manager in scientific industry.
  • Familiarity with traditional and modern training methods for adult learning.
  • Demonstrated excellence in project management and effectively managing multiple projects/priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills commensurate with the need to effectively manage teams of peers and to work closely with both external physicians/scientists and numerous in-house support groups, preferred.
  • Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality and integrity, represent the company's high ethics, moral behavior, and professionalism.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain scientific credibility while being commercially supportive, and to communicate scientific results and effectively respond to data queries from customers and/or consultants.
  • High proficiency in problem solving ability and strong scientific analytical skills.
  • Willingness/Ability to travel up to 20% at times is required.
