Job Details
The Clinical Research Directorate (CRD) provides clinical, medical and nursing support services for the Pediatric Oncology Branch (POB), within the Center for Cancer Research (CCR) in support to the NCI located on the main campus of the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland.
KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Works with a multidisciplinary clinical team providing comprehensive health care to patients in a research environment
- Screens potential research candidates, reviews for protocol eligibility, performs initial assessments and coordinates studies/appointments for clinical trials in collaboration with a Principal Investigator (PI) and other members of the team, and presents findings to the study during team meetings
- Obtains and reviews outside records and materials and presents to the study team
- Supports in-patient and out-patient care of subjects enrolled in experimental protocols and clinical trials
- Evaluates patients in in-patient and out-patient clinic settings, in coordination with the government attending physician
- Medically diagnoses and manages common acute or stable chronic health problems, injuries and illnesses, making assessments of acute and non-acute clinical problems and toxicities and reviews with the study team
- Performs comprehensive health care assessments by obtaining health and family medical histories
- Completes physical examinations
- Develops, implements, evaluates and modifies a plan for care, including appropriate patient/family counseling and education based on in-depth knowledge of the specific patient populations and/or protocols
- Assesses needs and/or problem areas and plans appropriate therapeutic measures
- Obtains informed consent and has an in-depth knowledge of the CTEP sponsored protocol and other relevant protocols within the branch
- Orders, performs and interprets basic laboratory diagnostic and treatment tests and procedures
- Distinguishes between normal and abnormal findings and determines which findings need further evaluation and/or collaboration assessment and documents which lab findings are clinically significant based on continuing dialogue with the PI and study team members
- Refers unusual problems to physicians or an administrative supervisor
- Orders, administers and adjusts trial medication under the guidance of a physician
- Develops written protocols for the management of illnesses and injuries in conjunction with the consulting and/or referring physician
- Explains discharge instructions and medication regimens to patients and follow-up with consulting service recommendations
- Demonstrates expertise in related healthcare, individual initiative, and independent judgment
- Counsels, supports and educates patients and staff on matters relating to health and research studies/protocols
- Performs clinical data recording, medical chart entries and completes medical records
- Completes in-depth documentation through written progress notes, dictation summaries, and communication with referring physicians according to medical record documentation requirements
- Performs retrievals from electronic medical information systems
- Collects and tracks, via shared spreadsheet, functional outcome forms and study/consult forms required by study calendar schema
- Provides clear, consistent communication to the study teams
- Provides coverage for team members and provides detailed sign-out to the study team during planned and unanticipated absences
- Liaises with Leidos Biomed and various NCI staff to initiate and complete tasks
- Attends scheduled patient care rounds and didactic lecture sessions of the assigned clinical team
- Assists in developing, implementing and evaluating medical service policies and practices
- Practices within boundaries established by the Nurse Practice Act, State of Maryland and Medical Board of the Clinical Center
- Ensures compliance with applicable licensure/certification requirements, healthcare standards, governmental laws and regulations, and policies, procedures and philosophy in nature
- Assists with clinical trials programs focused on developing novel therapies
This position is located in Bethesda, Maryland
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA)
- A Physician Assistant applicant must be a graduate from a physician assistant educational program, accredited by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessors, at a college, university, or educational institution that is accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the Secretary, U.S. Department of Education. Must have successfully completed the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) examination. Must be Maryland State Board eligible.
- A Nurse Practitioner applicant must possess a degree/diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant. Must have active, current registration as professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Must have appropriate certification issued by the appropriate certifying body the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), or the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC) as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be Maryland State Board eligible.
- All applicants: Eligibility includes documentation of a pending Maryland license
- Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
- A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible Physician's Assistant or Nurse Practitioner experience
- Ability to work and communicate effectively as a team member and maintain a collaborative relationship with the Medical Director and various levels of medical staff
- Ability to assess acute and non-acute medical problems
- Ability to develop patient rapport and provide emotional support in helping patients cope with stress associated with illnesses
- Knowledge of relationships between diseases, health assessment, counseling, diagnostic testing procedures, broad base clinical areas such as pathophysiology, psychosocial theory, pharmacology, and primary medical management practices
- Ability to conduct studies according to established Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines as defined by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) within the standard operating procedures and the Clinical Center's administrative policies of the operational clinic
- Knowledge of prevention, etiology, therapies and new research developments
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in an out-patient setting
- Oncology experience
- Prior nursing experience with clinical trials and/or oncology
- Basic knowledge of the components of a clinical research protocol
