Delivery and Device Research and Development (DDR&D) is responsible for the development and scale-up of new drug delivery devices for late stage clinical trials and commercial distribution. To maximize the opportunities associated with connected health, DDR&D has created a Digital Devices team with internal and external capabilities in electronics, embedded software development, wireless connectivity, and mobile app software development. This team will also manage the development of new innovative drug delivery and management systems and be responsible for understanding and influencing emerging standards and regulations.

We are seeking a highly motivated Electrical Engineer for Lilly's Delivery and Device Development organization. The Electrical Engineer is responsible for conducting electrical engineering activities for drug delivery systems during the development phase. Specifically, this role is responsible for conducting electrical engineering activities in the areas of concept development and prototyping, requirements development, design, risk management, and testing. A strong knowledge of complex electro-mechanical systems as well as experience developing safety critical systems is required for this role. Candidates must be proficient at developing early phase prototypes as well as developing and designing for finished products. The candidate must possess a history of strong practical engineering knowledge and a proven track record for timely and cost effective project delivery. Candidates will support the development of product development documentation within a regulatory environment for Class I, II and III medical devices.

Position Responsiblities:
  • Broad Electrical Engineering Design responsibilities across analog circuitry, RF antennas, and digital hardware designs that include signal conditioning, amplifiers, microprocessors, and microcontrollers.
  • Identify unique solutions to complex engineering problems and prove out those solutions through analysis and/or prototype development.
  • Execute product development activities for safety critical drug delivery devices this may include user needs, use cases, requirements, designs, electrical design, PCB layout, design for manufacturability and testability, risk management and test development.
  • Performs engineering modeling, simulations, analysis, and measurements.
  • Candidates should also be able to design, document and fabricate elctro-mechanical prototypes and test fixtures as well as be able to work with vendors for prototype builds for proof of concept as well as verification testing.
  • Conduct and document development activities for all phases of development in compliance with the Eli Lilly development processes.
  • Support the development of electrical engineering development procedures that are in compliance with the Eli Lilly development processes and external regulating bodies.
  • Support the establishment of electrical and software development tools and labs to enable product development activities.
  • Participation in preparation of time and cost estimates for projects as well as engineering schedules and plans.
  • Prepares, coordinates, and manages compliance testing for medical devices through nationally recognized testing laboratories.
  • Generate RFPs for vendors and suppliers and provide engineering guidance and oversight of their activities

Basic Qualifications
  • BS Engineering (Biomedical, Electrical Engineering preferred with 10 years electrical device design experience
  • OR
  • MS Engineering (Biomedical, Electrical Engineering preferred with 8 years electrical device design experience
  • OR
  • PhD Engineering (Biomedical, Electrical Engineering preferred with 3 years electrical device design experience


Additional Skills/Preferences
  • P.E. preferred
  • Experience in the design of RF communication digital and analog circuit design preferred
  • Experience with medical device development and verification of component parts and integrated systems preferred
  • Experience with embedded software
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work productively in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Experience in Digital Signal Processing preferred
  • Demonstrated record of developing intellectual property
  • Experience in contributing to the development of new quality management systems for connected device development preferred
  • Ability to identify problems and drive issue resolution/improvements
  • Knowledge of appropriate regulations (IEC60601, 21CFR 820.30, ISO13485, ISO 14971, etc) preferred
  • Effective technical writing skills as well as good verbal communication / presentation skills.
