Be a part of the revolution to integrate data-driven solutions to enable AbbVie's approach to better medicines through computer-aided image informatics. This position will join a rising team of global technical experts dedicated to enabling the R&D pipeline - from identifying the right molecular target to supporting patient selection. The Information Research team is looking for an intellectually curious data scientist to explore research in the area of biological image analysis. This position will work closely with IT experts across all R&D sites to set strategies around image capture, analysis, and storage. Additionally, this position will integrate seamlessly with preclinical efficacy, safety and translational research scientists to understand critical problems and implement deep learning approaches to accelerate the impact of image analysis across multiple therapeutic areas.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Collaborate with peers and cross-functional experts to understand current inventory of image workflows throughout AbbVie R&D. Rapidly advance agile, impactful, and cost-effective solutions to meet image capture, analysis, and storage needs for the organization.
  • Work closely with Enterprise Architecture to enable high performance compute capabilities to be leveraged by the AbbVie biological imaging community.
  • Act as a bridge between the scientific experts and software engineers to provide guidance for novel platforms to enable transformational image analytics.
  • Independently develop and apply deep learning algorithms to a number of imaging modalities - examples include fluorescently labeled or unlabeled microscopic images, tissue pathology, mass-spectrometry imaging, and flow cytometry - to enable understanding of biology, pathology or drug mechanisms.
  • Act as an internal resource in AI/ML. Think creatively to integrate deep learning techniques into image analysis workflows and champion new developments in the area of deep learning for biomedical imaging.
  • Effectively organize and present project objectives and progress. Contribute to technical publications and presentations.
  • Understand and adhere to corporate standards regarding applicable Corporate and Divisional Policies, including code of conduct, safety, GxP compliance, and data security.

  • The ideal candidate will have a MS in Biology, Pathology, Biomedical Engineering, or a related discipline with 10+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical or life science area.
  • Experience with commercial bioimaging software (Aperio, Halo, Visiopharm) and open source image analysis (OpenCV, VIPS) is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and train deep learning algorithms, specifically applied to imaging data.
  • Familiarity with one or more programming languages (Python, Java, R, MATLAB).
  • Ability to clearly communicate ideas and findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills - enthusiastic about sharing knowledge and collaborating with other teams.
  • Experience in using AI platforms (TensorFlow, scikit-learn, Apache Mxnet) and HPC technologies (AWS, Docker).
