Job Details

Join bluebird bio's enthusiastic and collaborative Preclinical Development team and contribute to the overall success of our novel immunotherapy and gene editing approaches. This role is in the Molecular Pathology group within Preclinical Development. The primary functions of this role are to collect and prepare animal tissues/cell products for evaluation by the Pathology staff. The candidate will work with two senior histotechnologists and three veterinary pathologists.

About the role:
  • Collect, prepare and section mouse and rat tissues for histologic evaluation
  • Prepare cell pellets and cytospin slides for histologic evaluation
  • Develop methods for and execute immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence studies
  • Develop methods for and execute in situ hybridization studies
  • Scan histology slides and perform digital image analysis
  • Propose and evaluate new histologic techniques of value to the bluebird bio pipeline
  • Present technical method development work and data at departmental meetings
  • Contribute to the development of and adherence to standard operating procedures, robust data collection and documentation procedures, and technical report generation

Requirements:
  • Associate or Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant field of study (biology, histology, histotechnology, microbiology, molecular biology, pathology)
  • Completion of a Histology Technician training program or equivalent
  • NSH certification is preferred
  • 2 to 5 years' experience preferred
  • Comfortable working with cross-functional immunotherapy and gene therapy research teams
  • Ability to multitask, schedule and manage multiple studies in a fast-paced environment
  • Willingness to learn new skills and adapt
  • Superior written and oral communication skills as evidenced by a robust publication and presentation record
  • Experience and enthusiasm for hands-on work in the laboratory
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment where results are achieved through influence, cooperation, and the incorporation of multiple points of view
  • Independently motivated, detail oriented and good problem solving ability
  • Excellent organizational skills, with an ability to embrace change and multi-task in an extremely fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communications skills and ability to influence across multiple functions
