KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
The Veterinarian Manager will be responsible for:
- Resolving issues pertaining to laboratory animal husbandry, health and welfare.
- Provide managerial oversight of the Receiving and Quarantine Program & Veterinary Associates.
- Perform administrative and other duties relating to the laboratory animal medicine program including procurement, and budgeting functions
- Works with the Attending Veterinarian to review and implement guidelines and administer procedures to ensure full compliance with all applicable regulations, policies and standards required to maintain AAALAC accreditation of the animal care and use program
- Directing or administering veterinary, medical diagnostic, surgical and clinical treatment procedures to various species of animals maintained in multiple animal facilities at the NCI-Frederick
- Assist with training programs for animal caretakers, technicians and research staff who utilize research animals including; rodents and aquatics
- Ability to review and implement standard operating procedures governing all research animals including rodents and aquatics; health maintenance and husbandry functions
- Perform a variety of both invasive and noninvasive surgical procedures especially in rodents
- Provides consultative services to scientific and technical personnel pertaining to the selection and use of animal models, assists in development, design or evaluation of animal research protocols and animal holding facilities, and performs in-depth evaluation of the relationships of animal disease to research programs
- This position supports the NCI-Frederick Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
- Participates in the weekend/holiday on-call rotation with other veterinarians for all species which presently includes rodents and aquatics
- Work may involve the use of potentially hazardous materials or may be located in areas where such materials are used. Work may require the use of personal protective equipment and adherence to strict safety protocols
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduation from a veterinary school accredited by the AVMA (e.g. D.V.M. or V.M.D.) or satisfactory completion of the foreign equivalency examination (passing grade) given by the AVMA. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
- Completion of ACLAM-recognized formal residency program in laboratory animal medicine or a minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience in the field of laboratory animal medicine
- License to practice veterinary medicine in the U.S.
- Must be able to function independently in an animal research facility environment, and in support of investigators engaged in animal research
- Independently identify and evaluate animal health issues, provide clinical diagnoses, therapeutics and post-procedural care for research animals
- Identification of regulatory/compliance issues and the ability to work with the IACUC and veterinary staff to resolve issues
- Possess a detailed comprehension of regulatory requirements and AAALAC standards
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- ACLAM Board Certification
- Experience with the husbandry and experimental manipulation of Gnotobiotic animals
- Experience with rodent surgical models used in cancer research
- Experience with Xenopus and Zebrafish in research setting
- Experience in training personnel including investigators and technicians
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the demonstrated ability to interact effectively with others
