The Diabetes Complications team at Lilly strives to find and deliver innovative therapies. We are looking for a Research Scientist who is passionate about this mission. Have you experience managing data-driven research projects? Do you have strong interpersonal and presentation skills? Have you worked in drug discovery teams to advance key therapies to make patient's lives better? Would you thrive working in a collaborative research environment? You will function as a Diabetes Complications team member interacting with diverse disciplines such as Biology, Chemistry, Translational Science, Medicine, Biologic Engineering, and Toxicology. This is an exciting opportunity to use your strong research skills to impact human health.
In this role some of your responsibilities include:
  • Identification and validation of novel therapeutic targets for the treatment of atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease, and additional complications in patients with diabetes.
    • Propose new research hypotheses
    • Generate disease insights
    • Create and prosecute a drug discovery flow scheme
    • Assess target safety risks
  • Supervise and mentor associate scientists
  • Collaborate with in silico research scientists to answer key questions where advanced scientific understanding is needed to solve problems, validate targets and prioritize portfolio assets
  • Contribute to cross-functional portfolio therapeutic development projects for the treatment of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease
    • Lead and assist in the identification, evaluation, and selection of new small and large molecule therapeutic targets
    • Design and oversee the implementation of assays for the development of clinical candidate molecules
    • Collaborate with chemists and protein engineers to create structure-activity relationships and optimize the therapeutic for clinical evaluation
    • Recognize the relationships between therapeutic efficacy, patient subpopulations, clinical trial design and outcomes that significantly impact clinical development
  • Monitor research literature and regularly communicate current trends and innovative methods and applications to scientific partners
  • Engage key Diabetes and Complications R&D stakeholders in research needs assessment in order to plan and organize the execution of value-focused research projects
  • Curate scientific alliances with key leaders in academia/biotechnology to assure best practices and key capabilities in atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease and diabetes

Basic Qualifications
  • PhD in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, physiology or related discipline
  • Emphasis on metabolism, lipoprotein physiology, or biology of diabetes and complications preferred

  • Experience with drug discovery teams
  • Strong writing and oral presentation skills
