Job Details
KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversees an animal-based research support involving one or more species of laboratory animals maintained in multiple animal facilities on the Bethesda NIH campus, including a non-human primate facility.
- Serves as the Attending Veterinarian for the NCI-Bethesda Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC).
- Provides managerial oversight of the Laboratory Animal Medicine office and the supervision of other staff, including Animal Program Veterinarians and ACUC Coordinators.
- Establishes guidelines and administers procedures to ensure full compliance with all applicable regulations and standards to maintain AAALACi accreditation of the animal care programs and facilities.
- Represents the organization on various NIH animal care-related committees.
- Directs or administers veterinary medical, diagnostic, surgical and clinical treatment procedures to various species, including rodents, non-human primates, dogs, pigs, and aquatic animals.
- Shares emergency on-call duties with other veterinarians.
- Directs training programs for animal caretakers, technicians and research staff.
- Provides consultative services to scientific and technical personnel for the selection and use of research animals, the development of animal research protocols, and the relationship between animal health and research outcomes.
- Work may involve the use of potentially hazardous materials or may be located in areas where such materials are used. Work may require the use of personal protective equipment and adherence to strict safety protocols.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduation from a veterinary school accredited by the AVMA (e.g. D.V.M. or V.M.D.) or satisfactory completion of the foreign equivalency examination (passing grade) given by the AVMA. ACLAM board certification is required. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
- License to practice veterinary medicine in the U.S.
- 10+ years of prior experience including 6+ years experience leading teams or projects.
- Broad knowledge of laboratory animal health/medicine, and veterinary treatments and procedures.
- Must function independently in an animal facility to identify and evaluate animal health issues, provide clinical diagnoses, therapeutics and post-procedural care for research animals.
- Experience with AAALACi accreditation processes.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience handling mice and non-human primates in a research setting, with technical skills in surgical procedures.
- Experience consulting with scientists regarding animal-based research and development of Animal Study Proposals (ASP).
- Experience in veterinary diagnostics, clinical medicine, resource management and facility planning.
- Excellent written and verbal skills.
