The Genomics Research Center (GRC) is a newly created center of excellence for genetics and genomics that supports both Discovery and Development. The GRC plays an integral role towards our goal of developing world class genetics and genomics programs, focusing on finding the right targets and helping us better understand not only human disease biology but also the behavior of and response to our drugs in clinical trials. A key pillar of the GRC is the Department of Computational Genomics which responsible for leading the data analyses from projects within the GRC, such as large population cohort studies that aim to identify and characterize novel targets for the treatment of diseases across multiple therapeutic areas. We have an exciting opportunity for a Associate Scientific Director with medical expertise, based in North Chicago, IL reporting to the Head of Computational Genomics.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expertise and data analyses for human genetic databases. Drive ontology decisions in order to harmonize phenotypes to enable data analyses across multiple cohorts from different countries.
  • Provide medical expertise for genetic, genomic or epigenetic studies applied to AbbVie clinical trials.
  • Collaborate with Medical Directors in Clinical Development as well as other Scientific Directors within the GRC to identify relevant questions and design studies related to drug response or disease etiology, with a focus on the computational aspects of the projects.
  • Collaborate with scientists across different Early Discovery therapeutic areas to interpret and incorporate genetic findings into new targets or for validation of existing targets
  • Provide computational support for external collaborations and consortia involving human cohorts


The level is commensurate with experience.

Basic:
  • PharmD/PhD or other advanced degree required.
  • Relevant experience in bioinformatics, computer science, engineering, statistics, or mathematics.
  • Knowledge of translating genomic data into clinically relevant results.
  • Knowledge of programming languages and working in a HPC linux environment
  • Experience with various ontologies and controlled vocabularies and coding systems.
  • Experience with large-scale research projects involving next generation DNA sequencing data (e.g. whole exome and whole genome) in conjunction with results from informatics and wide array of molecular biology strategies.
  • Experience or strong knowledge of pharmacogenomics or pharmacogenetics.
  • Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills

Preferred:
  • A medical degree, with a strong background in genetic association studies, and family based genetic studies, knowledge of how drugs are developed. Additional degrees in relevant disciplines, such as bioinformatics, computer science, engineering, statistics, or mathematics.
  • The Candidate should have demonstrated ability to analyze data from human genetics or genomics studies delivering novel genetic findings and medically relevant gene discoveries.
  • Hands-on experience working with large human genetic population databases
  • Experience working in a cloud-based computing environment with version control and containers.
  • Experience with large-scale research projects involving next generation DNA sequencing data (e.g. whole exome and whole genome) as well as array based genotype data
  • Experience or strong knowledge of a specific therapeutic area
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in a collaborative environment
