The Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission by providing a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and services that are focused on the design, generation, characterization and application of genetically engineered and biological animal models of human disease, which are aimed at the development of targeted diagnostics and therapies. LASP contributes to advancing human health, developing new treatments, and improving existing treatments for cancer and other diseases while ensuring safe and humane treatment of animals.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

The Animal Caretaker I will be responsible for:
  • Performing general laboratory animal housekeeping and facility cleaning duties
  • Stocking supplies
  • Keeping basic records
  • Operating automatic washing and cleaning equipment
  • Performing related duties required for the proper care, feeding, and housing of laboratory animals
  • Work may involve the use of potentially hazardous chemical, biological, or radiological materials or may be located in areas where such materials are used and require adherence to strict safety protocols
  • Work schedule may include weekend and holiday hours

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to handle a variety of laboratory animals
  • Ability to keep basic records
  • Ability to lift to 50 lbs. and wear personal protective equipment
  • Basic computer skills
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
  • Experience with the handling of rodents, operation of cage and rack washing equipment, receiving and inventory, and general housekeeping
  • Strong observational, communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
